    First Elk with a bow

Just found the hunting thread on this site and hopefully i will have a lot to add this coming season...i just got back from my third year elk hunting and finally connected after many close calls. I stalked this elk while it was bedded in some sage brush and open field. Shot him at 50yards and unfortunately missed the first shot just over his back..i cant even begin to explain the amount of buck fever i had knowing that 3 years of hard work all came down to this one shot...i have shot some very large whitetails but nothing compaired to this...he stood up and looked right at me...i quickly knocked another arrow and got a second shot off before he bolted... the second shot hit a little far back and i could see the arrow sticking out the back side about halfway back...he ran 30 yards and bedded down..tried to get up 3 or 4 times but couldnt and i thought we was down for good...i backed out of there as he was with the whole heard of cows and i didnt want to spook them. I watched him all day from a hill about 250 yards away in the rain and he got up at least 5 times and would move 5 or 10 yards before bedding down again... had to go in after waiting 6 hours and put another stalk on...he was still alive and i had to get withing 15 yards as the pines were so thick before i could put a finishing arrow in him. certainly not the most poetic of hunts but was action packed with many highs and lows...i have a ton of video that needs to be edited so hopefully i should have it up within a week or so...my father was on the hill 250 yards away videoing me and got the shot on tape, while i got a ton of other footage while i was stalking him. Hes not the biggest of bulls by any means but a very quality animal for the area of montana i was in and certainly a fantastic elk for my first one...it will sure be hard to beat thats for sure...stay tuned for the video...
