Md's gun season has been in since Saturday.
I spent most of Saturday in a tree and took a doe and a button buck on Saturday night. The little sucker was 50 yds for 30 min and I couldn't see a nub so I finally took "him" after dropping a good sized doe.
When I got to him in the dark I noticed that the right side, of course the side facing me didn't have a nub, but the left side did.
At this particular farm we are trying to get the buck/doe ratio right and we have a number of small bucks running around and maybe a booner out there too. Out of the 47 deer taken off the place this season only 4 have been buttons and 2 racked bucks so I think we're closing in on a good ratio.
Anyway....Sunday it was raining too hard to make me climb a tree so I took a day off.
Monday morning Drew missed a shot at a few does at around 9:30 and I was about to hit the truck when I had a pair of does come by. I took the smaller one @ 35 yds and watched the other for 5 min or so through my scope just waiting for a shot. I texted my dad and the other guy hunting with us and as I was cocking the hammer my phone started vibrating.
The doe walked off behind a thicket and I checked the phone to see that my dad was calling. Just then she poked her head out and if she took one more step it was gonna be a 90 yd neck shot with a perfect shooting lane.
**** the hammer on the T/C and off she goes up the hill.
WTF happened? I call dad and he tells me he's about 150 yds to my left. OH, That's what happened!!
I've got to get that guy a leash. He got bored and wanted to help me with my first deer.
At least it wasn't a nice buck, but I still wanted that double.
Hunted wed morn and saw one measly spike and dad saw nothing. Shot a small doe in the middle of the day when looking for a stand location that I had never been to, then got skunked in the evening. I did get to watch about 300 geese come to the field in front of me, and listen to a mess of mallards talk as the sun went down.
I had a few hours free this morning so I too a good buddy out to a feeder stand in hopes of helping him break a skunk streak.
He brought me a monster sausage and egg sandwich and after I sent him to his stand I thought about just sleeping in the truck until I heard him shoot.
by 6:30 is was getting light and I decided to walk up a hill and glass a 600 yd long field. I let a fox go at 75 yds and decided to sit in a nearby stand that can see about half of the county.
At 7:30 a few deer showed up at 550 yds and I almost went on a stalk. This field has a series of hills in it and they're great for sneaking up on deer. It's fun to stalk whitetails after taking so many from a stand over the years.
I looked to my left and sure enough here came a big doe. She was at about 150 yds so I got ready for the shot.
She disappeared behind a tree and popped out at 50 yds and went about 20" further.
The .25-06 put down the 4th deer of it's career with a high shoulder shot.
That makes 4 deer since saturday and some very happy friends when I call them and let them know the meat is at the butcher.
Maybe I'll get my 10 doe limit this gun season, we'll see!
Hope everyone else is having a good season.
-D
