    Farm's planted with Cotton...

2009 and 2010, the farm I hunt in Northampton Co. produced some nice deer. I actually saw more bucks over the past two years than I ever have...That being said, there was corn in '09 and soybeans in '10. This year it is all cotton. Does this mean there will be significantly less activity this year? Most of the surrounding farmland is planted with cotton where I hunt but there are a couple of bean fields in the general vicinity. What are your experiences hunting in the white stuff?

    Scattered Grass,

I hope you took picture's of the deer you "used" to see! Just like fishing it's all about feed. Those bean field's will help. But if the feed drop's off for the population that was there, they'll move along looking for greener pasture's. The only saving grace would be if you had a good stand of hardwood's with a good annual acorn crop. Those acron's are what make your horn's (my opinnion), unless there is a steady peanut crop close by. Behind my house there used to be a really good stand of hardwood's with the large farm field in corn or beans (rotated) every year. Back then my son and I could walk arould the outskirt's of the field and see deer in the 30's (no joke). They have since cut all the hardwoods down and plant only cotton. Two evening's ago I saw a doe and a yearling out back. I broke out the binocular at the kitchen window and called out to my wife, "hey come look at this, we've got 2 deer in the back". Fact of the matter is, deer don't eat much cotton. Sorry, I feel your pain! Frank
