    Early report from the farm

I got the call from the farmer this morning. Deer are taking over the p-nut field. While he was on the phone telling me about seeing them, he was watching approx thirty deer in this one field. Usually this field is planted with corn or beans. The deer can hide real good in those crops. With the p-nuts being planted, the deer have nothing to hide in. Farmer has to look at them! This is bad for the deer. The farmer wants them gone. He says that this year he wants us to HUNT his land, as opposed to the past few years where we have allowed them to walk.

So, my question is now, how many deer should be taken out the thirty so that the farmer can make a crop?

    how many to take???

Did the farmer really see 30 deer... your have to keep a watch yourself to see whats really going on first.

The nut field is the center of attraction this week... in the upcoming weeks that could and should change over to some other hot food item, so maybe the farmer won't see as many deer all of the time.

If, there are 30 deer in the field, in all likely hood there are another 30 in the nearby area...

Remember a doe in its second breeding season usually have triplets with twins a sure thing, so even if only 10 of those 30 deer are 2 or 3 yrs. old they will have anywhere from 20 to 30 offspring next year so in theory you really have no worries at all about removing two thirds of the herd.

Whats the buck to doe ratio... it would behoove you anyway to remove the doe anyway it helps alot more that you think.

For every one you kill, 12 come to it's funeral. It's nothing here to go out spot lighting and see 100 to 150 in an hour. Alot of folk's up "north" don't realize how many deer we actually have down here. They're vermin. I take 8 a year minimum to feed this family for the year. It's not unusual at all to take 3 at one sitting. Some folk's have a hard time shooting doe's, not me. I'm typing here in the back office and am watching a herd of them in the field, behind the house. Frank

I saw a lot of them when I lived in NW New Jersey!! They are considered vermin there too only hunting them is very limited and can only be done in certain areas. What is more annoying is that they are highly domesticated and fear virtually nothing (making them easy to hunt if you are in the right place). I have literally nudged them with the bumper of my truck to move them off the road so I could pass..!!!

We went to the farm for a little while this morning to put out some corn, and knock the snakes out the tree stands. I guess we saw about twenty deer and one snake. I got some pics of the deer, but did not get to the camera before the copperhead had crawled out of my view.
