I always struggle with bringing the boat back from OC but then the gear shifts and hunting starts.
We shot one of our favorite woodduck spots Saturday morning and knocked down 15 and picked up 10 with a very young lab by 8am. This location is very thick and it is hard to find them even with a dog. Dog did great considering the conditions. Young Jake, my cousins 9 year old son, had a great morning in the blind watching the melee.
I picked everything up did some work on the farm to get ready for the upcoming goose season and switched back to the muzzleloader for the evening. Drove over to our other farm for the evening deer hunt. We managed our farms for deer as best we can considering the pressure around them. We have not killed a buck off this farm in 4 years. I had scouted this spot but had not hunted it during either bow season or the first two days of muzzleloader.
The first deer was a nice 120 inch 8 pointer at about 5:00. An hour later in his same track came a large thick horned deer. I hestited at first but thru the scope I saw a bunch of junk on his rack. Shot him at about 60 yds and he ran 30 yds and fell.
He dressed out at 187 lbs and according to my taxidermist is at least 6 years old. He is a main frame 8 with a bunch of extra stuff.
Jerry, what a nice day! Ducks and a nice buck - you Judge's always know how to get it done. I hunted Dorchester for sika for the early blackpowder season. I saw a bunch but nothing worth shooting that was close enough.
Thanks for the kind words. It was a fun day to say the least.
Beibs-I actually called Bill at the show after I shot it.. He and I are the only ones who deer hunt these farms and we work pretty hard to produce some quality. His words were "and I am stuck at a boat show".
Back to a bow again as the pre-rut activity is kicking in
