Well finally made it through exam week and headed to the club with ducks in mind. Wednesday morning started off slow with thick fog. We paddled the boats out to the blinds we made the day before and got set up in my buddies hole. After watching hundreds of birds pass out of shooting distance we were all getting a little restless until a lone teal came in decoying out of the fog. Got him down and settled back in for another 30 minutes until we heard a single goose in the distance. After some coercing, the goose met his demise as well. That was it for day 1.
Day 2 improved slightly as we went to one of my spots in the swamp and were met once again with fog. There's a roost probably 400 yards away but the birds decided to get up and fly the opposite way for the most part. We end up with 5 woodies, a teal, a mallard, and a merganser. Things really quieted down quickly and we were out at 8:30.
Our group decided to hunt one last morning in yet another spot that was low on water a few weeks ago. We were basically banking on the fact that all this rain made a big difference in this spot. Got down there this morning after a rough ride through a new cutover and were greeted with more water than we expected! Now it looks like were hunting somewhere in Arkansas as the flooded timber is waist deep and we are pumped. Got a few decoys out and waited for them to come. We got our group limit on woodies pretty quickly and had to start really choosing our shots. We had woodies flying around us until we left and could have shot double what we did. Knocked down a mallard, a few mergansers, and tangled with a flock of geese but no luck there. Happy with our hunt, we left around 9:00 to go get some breakfast.
Total was:
21 Woodies
1 mallard
3 mergansers.
Overall, a good duck hunt for Halifax county, NC. Hopefully will get back out again first of the week.
Capt. Terry and I are gearing up for some duck'n the next couple days around the holiday. He and I started off in a new spot yesterday and ended up with our limit of Woodies. # drakes and 1 hen.
Then I went back that afternoon with my oldest son Jack(10) and we noticed some Snow geese working near my pond, so I decided this might make a good sneak hunt. Especially since Jack hasn't had much experience with this type of hunting.
So we camo'd up and made our way to within 20 yards of these snow and I dropped 8 the first cracked, then two more, then boom two more. 12 snows-3 shots. Had to finish off a couple cripples.
Jack was impressed to say least and I had plenty of snow goose meat laying in the field.
