Finally got it done yesterday, start of the firearms season in Pa...and i find myself in a tree stand with my bow...wtf? I was supposed to head upstate to deer camp with the boys for 4 days...but work as usual kept me from heading up. As it turned out my cuz wasnt heading up either so we put together a game plan for the morning hunt. We have been laying off this one hill side that holds some good deer, a little too tight for the bang bangs so archery it was. I had already said to myself before i ever got into the stand that today was meat day...if its brown its down kind of day. I didnt have to wait long, a little before 7 am and barely had enough light to light up my fiberoptic pins and a 5 yard shot...thwack.This deer hauled over towards my cuz's stand and i hear the tell tale shot of his extremely loud bow.....ok he stuck her too.I couldnt see my arrow from my stand so i started doubting...mabye i missed and the arrow is buried under the leaves..low light i guess i missed. About 8 am a doe and 2 yearlings get to 10 yards....the big doe busted me cold...the bigger of the 2 yearlings....stayed about 5 seconds too long and i drilled her at about 8 yards...pass through shot, she ran about 20 yards and crumbled. This deer just wouldnt die, it was really only about 15 minutes but it felt like an hour, seem like my shot was a little high...double lung but top of the lungs. We had planned on meeting at the trucks around 9:30...and honestly i couldnt sit in that stand for another minute...so at 9 i made the call to my cuz. I asked him if he shot the one from first light...he said you mean the one that ran over and died 5 feet from my tree....aha i thought that shot looked good...so i got 2 does down.....were eating good, turns out the shot i heard early was him drilling a big bodied doe...or so he thought, a scrubby 5 pointer it was, just legal and low light....but a good deer it was, so by 9 am we had 3 deer down all with bows during the firearms season. We had a break for lunch...deer steaks he had marinating overnight.....you wanna talk about good stuff, then we did some drives down along the river bottom that were fruitless but by then it didnt matter. It felt good to go elbow deep in a deer again, and a pile of deer in the bed of the truck....yes yesterday was a good day.
