Oh what a great time of year, the start of Hunting Season!
I was very excited this year for dove season to roll around, as this is the first year that I really had confidence in Maybelle and was ready to put her to work.
We hunted Saturday at our friend Sandy's place just accross the border in VA. Jeremy, Dad, Gypsy, Harrison, Finn, Mr. Garber, Tammy (the Boykin), Rick and several new friends.
After a great BBQ lunch we went to the field, and things were a little slow, it was hot and the doves had already cleaned out the field we were in. Sandy suggested we go look at another field he had, so Jeremy, Harrison the dogs and I did, well they were there and had a really good shoot from then on.
It was a good hunt, great food, great fellowship.
Maybelle did pretty good on Saturday, but it was a little on the hot side and she did not want to hold the birds very good all the way back to me, she did however find two birds in the super thick stuff, that I would not have found.
Today I was invited to join the Perry's (Bryan, Sailor and Kyle) and Stewart to travel to Bertie County to a dove hunt. I am always excited about this one as the farmer that is kind enough to invite us, is really into dove hunting and manages his land well. He is also a Boykin enthusiast, and it was cool to see his new male Boykin.
Today the shooting was off the hook, and beleive it or not, I quickly got a limit. Maybelle's performance was stellar, not only fetching my limit to hand, but she was steady, responded well to casting, well mannered and behaved in a professional manner. After I was done, she retrieved some of Stewart and Kyle's birds and found several of theirs in the cotton as well. It is so rewarding to see her work.
Sailor (Bryan's Chesapeake) did exceptionally well considering it was only the second time he has ever been hunting.
How about some pics....
