Double Birds
Walked away from the house with the wife at 5:30. A slight drizzle had covered the ground during the night so we would be very sneaky getting into the woods. Got about 50 yards from the spot I wanted to be at to listen for birds and my wife asked " can we just stand here" I said" ok, lets o sit by this log just in case." At 6:09 we heard the first gobble 400 yards to our left. For the next 6 minutes four birds just yelled their butts off.
I said "time to go" and she agreed. Before getting up i asked her" do you think i should blow the owl call one time to see if any are over here or go silent?" she said " go silent" we stood up, took ten steps and a turkey flushed from the tree above us. Dang! oh well there were four more begging for us to come on over. Although my wife thought it was hilarious. We snuck on over to the hill above where two birds were gobbling, got set up in a root ball from one of the previous hurricanes. The birds were on the ground now and it was 6:20. Hit the call, four or five yelps on my slate, and RROOAARR back at me from 150 yards. 2 minutes go by, hit four or five yelps and RROOAARR back at me from 80 yards. put the call down and told her to get ready. Birds are sighted at 75 yards and strut/walking in. I am kicking myself inside for not having a decoy. Birds get to 50 yards and stop in a nice clearing, RROOAARR again! my heart is pumping and its hard to control my breathing. Both birds are good sized, but one is definitely bigger. I like to shoot only birds with beards touching the ground so there will be some left for next year. If I shot all the jakes that came in there wold never be anything worth shooting. Turkeys have a hard enough time making it these days with wood s disappearing and so many dogs and other predators. For 10 minutes they ROAR at 50 yards. I cant pick up my call so I do a few soft yelps with my mouth. They don't take the bait. they want to see her. I got 3 1/2 4's and i am pretty sure i can make a shot at 50 yards. At one point the birds gobbled and their heads crossed and I told her "I could have shot both at that point" I realize that this is not right and if I want to stick to my rule then I should let the other one go. The birds separate by 4 ft and are not going to get any closer. The big one takes one more step to the right and I tell her " I'm gonna shoot the one on the right" BOOM! They both drop on the spot! I go running over. The smaller one is spurting blood from its temple area. One pellet in the dome, thats all. I am blown away, two brids! Snap a pick with my phone, thats why the poor quality, and back at the house at 6:45. Great morning. You can see the one on the right where he got hit in the head. Final results: Big bird: 20.5 lbs, 10 3/4 beard, 1 in spurs Small bird: 15.5 lbs, 10 inch beard, 3/4 in spurs Last edited by Anders; 04-13-2009 at 02:18 PM. |
