IT SEEMS ONCE THE WEATHER BREAKS THEY GO TOTALLY NUTS, RIGHT NOW THERE IN WHAT I CALL HERDS, THERE IN BUNCHES OF 60 TO 80 BIRDS AND THERE ALL OVER THE PLACE,TEARING UP EVERYTHING.
Although I didn't hear them, I went down to check a new deer stand spot and I did find this surprise. Guess I might want to pick up a turkey tag this year.![]()

WHOA, NICE, VERY NICE...
I'm new to the turkey game...but these look like a bunch of young birds to me. I see one or two beards, but none are strutting so I can't tell how full their tail feathers are...what are some other visual clues to age turkeys that you guys use?
2YR, OLD BIRDS AND UP WILL HAVE A EVEN HEIGHT OF TAIL FEATHERS IN THE FAN, THE TOM IN YOUR PICTURES ARE 2YR OLD BIRDS.
THE BEARD GROWS ABOUT 5" A YR. WITH JAKES STARTING WITH JUST A NUB, 2YRS, 5", 3YRS, 10", THEN THE BEARDS START TO DRAG AND WEAR, BUT THEY START TO FILL OUT AND GET REAL THICK WHEN OLDER.
HOW LONG ARE THE SPURS, ONCE YOU HIT 1" YOUR LOOKING AT A 3YRS, ANYTHING LONGER IS OLDER THEN ADD A CURVED LONG SPUR THATS SHARP IS A REAL MATURE BIRD.
SIZE IS TOUGH TO GO BY BECAUSE OF THE FOOD THAT IS AVAILABLE TO THEM, BUT A HUGE TOM WITH A THICK LONG BEARD IS A REAL GOOD SIGN OF A MATURE BIRD.
WHAT WE CALL A THUNDER CHICKEN, IS WHEN YOU HEAR THE THUNDER IN HIS GOBBLE, YOU WILL NO THE DIFFERENCE RIGHT AWAY, FROM THE YOUNGER BIRDS.
IN THE FIELDS WHEN THEY ARE DOING THE DANCE THE MATURE BIRD WILL BE THE ONE WITH THE HOT HEN AND THE YOUNGER BIRDS WILL BE ON THE EDGES OF THE ACTION.
