    Deer Tumor?

I was just looking through some old Trail Cam pics on my computer and ran across a few that i had forgotten about. I got these pictures on my trail camera last year. This Fawn has some sort of growth about the size of a basketball on its underside. Thought it would be good topic for discussion...

Some people i have shown think its a hernia. Also had someone say something about a Hydrocist. I have no clue what it is, but lets hear what you all think about this little guy.

I never did see the deer in person. I imagine that thing might make it a little difficult to get away from predators...

Interesting. I have no idea what it is. Last year while bow hunting, I had this 5 pointer come in chasing does. He had all kinds of things hanging down from his belly area. They almost looked like utters. The "utters" were black and dark colored. I would've shot him just to see what it was, but I could never get a shot off.

That's a hernia. We see them just like that all the time in pigs. This one looks like its from the umbilical cord area that didn't seal up and the intestines dropped through.

    So next question,

If the deer wasnt nabbed by a coyote or something, does the hernia heal itself or is he stuck with it?

Animal is stuck with it for life. Weakness in the abdominal wall. A loop of intestine can get tangled in it and the animal will die.

I shot a piebald buck on the easter shore of Virginia about five archery seasons ago that had a very similar growth on him. He was approximately two and a half years old and it was my first time seeing such a thing. Upon recovery, he had a great deal of nasty infection in the area as I made an incision. II was afraid to eat him so I left him in the woods and reported his location via gps to the local warden. He initially informed me he thought some type of parasite was the cause but he never got back to me.
