I had a bassett hound that I kept in an invisible fence when I lived in subdivision hell years ago. I was on the main highway side, neighbors behind me had a hard fence, so the bassett had control from the highway in front to the fence in back. Well, the little neighbor boy had to cross my back yard to get to his buddies house, so he'd stand out there just out of Cletus's range and yell til I came outside. "Mr, can you hold your dog for me?" "Sure, buddy" Cletus would come over, I'd kneel down and hold him...he'd be drooling, dying to chase that little pest. (he only wanted to play, didn't have a mean bone in his body). The little pest would start across the yard, eyes on me an 'ol Cletus the whole way. I'd let him get just to the halfway point and, damn it, Cletus would get out of my hands and the chase was ON! Little Timmy'd cross the line looking like Cletus would slam on the brakes so hard he'd go stern over bow in flip, get up and start barkin' like hell.Panting he'd say "Mr, he got away from you AGAIN!" "Sure did, I'll hold him better next time, promise!" That scene played out every Saturday and it never got any less hilarious. Hope I didn't scar the little booger for life... Cletus never got the glory, but man he loved every step of the chase after little Timmy. Incidentally, never crossed the fence either, even after the battery on his collar was shot for two years. |

Capt Mike I didnt mean to single you out just read a few more of the posts and it seems that the beagle family has an over whelming urge to slaughter everything in site. Between the 3 of you Mom Dad and Baby Boy you average 75 a year with 13 out of 28 bucks shot at killed wow we are so impressed with your "huntin" abilities try going to the range and learning how to shoot. In the 28 years I have hunted I have only had one deer I shot at not go down and be found and it was shot a half hour later by my brother who jumped itwhile we were searching for it. You should be ashamed of yourselves and then to brag about it like it was impressive what a sporting family.

No prob nautiduck...
75 is the goal, seldom reached because I like hunting big deer and not shooting the first doe to come out. Usually around fifty...gotta balance the ratio. people around me own 50 or 100acres and shoot everything with horns but no does. Idiots, with a stonage mentality towards management.

WHY CANT WE ALL JUST GET ALONG!!!!
Nautiduck...........yours opinion is just that, your opinion. But just to inform you as to our laws, in the lower state it is legal and until that changes deer hunting with dogs will continue. Now.........as far as your statement terming everyone that deer hunts with dogs as SLOBS, thats a little over the top. Aint it just like a yankee to move into a different area and suddenly try to change things to the way it was where they come from. I dont have a problem with your opinion, i realize that its a dieing sport but for you to come in here and call others names that enjoy a sport is a little childish. Yes, a sport, thats actually what history calls it. Contrary to what you think is sporting. But then again its understandable, I mean you are a yankee, so you wouldnt know much about southern traditions. Do some research and see how long dogs have been used to hunt game, it might enlighten your viewpoint, try a couple thousand years. Although I doubt it. You come into the south from up north and compare us with PA, which is no comparison, yes they have some huge bucks, but they have no where near the population of deer that SC has. We have the longest deer season in the union for a reason. Numbers management is one of the best tools for growing large bucks, thus the reason for killing 75 does in a year. The best ratio is actually a 1 to 1 ratio of does to bucks. But obviously that is for trophy management. Once again comparing PA to SC is not comparing apples to apples. It is a different gene of whitetail. Commonly seen in Pa are 300+ lb bucks, seldum seen in SC. I can go on and on about the minerals that we dont have in SC versus Pa. Not to mention your season is what a couple weeks? One reason for that is the terrain, Pa hunters would kill every deer if it lasted from August to January due to the lack of dense woods and forest.
Now getting back to dog hunting, we actually use horses with our dogs. We do have several thousand acres to hunt and seldom do our dogs ever leave the lease due to roads cutting up our blocks to a thousand acres each. And a SLOB, Ok call me what you want, you get on a horse, ride all day or take off running to cut off a deer on foot, not many SLOBS can do that. But I know its easy to play Keyboard Captain and belittle others because you dont necesarily agree with their beliefs. I wonder who will support you after pissing off a huge population of sportsman that you may one day need to help support you when anti hunt, gun and other radicals want to stop all your hobbies such as bow hunting or still hunting. What happens when the Bird Lovers gain enough power to stop quail duck or pheasant hunters. Oh well you've alienated a huge portion of voters that could stand with you due to your childish heckling. What then? I've said this before, there will come a day when we will all need to stand together to fight the interest that intends to take away our outdoor pleasures as we know them. Personally, I dont agree with everything outlined in this thread but I am willing to fight for your right to enjoy what you want to enjoy. You can call me names but when it comes time to vote, I'll stand with you when they want to take away your right to hunt. Whether its with a bow or with a dog, its all the same boys. We dont need to be fighting these issues among ourselves. We all need to stand together when the time comes for the good of us all. Now if that pisses you off then I'm sorry. You'll be really pissed when they stop all hunting!! |

Not a full blooded yank Moms from here Dads from there I was born here and came up in both. Runnin dogs is illegal in this part of the state, which is what I stated I am full aware that is legal in the lower part of the state but legal or not it is lazy and slobbish.

I just want you to see my point....thats all. Think of it as dominos, once they get a knockdown its just a matter of time before they move on to what you think is sporting. As our population increases, hunting as we know it will cease unless we all stand together.
Already the anti's are trying to get bans on any kind of shooting with a quarter mile of a highway. Do you know how much land that would shut down to any type of hunting or target shooting. Think about it. I just think that we should coexist together as well as we can. As long as we respect each others views and try to respect others space then it shouldnt be that big of a problem. You know some years ago, we had a gentleman with the same attitude as some on this thread, his young son shot a nice buck still hunting that left his stand and later died a half mile from where he shot it which ended up on our lease. That gentleman had the nerve to trespass on our lease to find his deer. Well after dark he gave up and came to my home to ask for assistance. I bit my tongue and took a young hound from one of our pens put him on a leash and went to find his childs first deer. So get this, a SLOB and a SORRY MUTT tracked that deer for a half mile into our lease. I found the deer and carried it out on my shoulder for the kid. I guess the moral of the story is that I could have said go screw yourself and if you go back on our property I'll have you arrested for trespassing, but I didnt, I remembered my first deer I killed at age 7 and wanted to make sure this kid had the same memory of his first deer kill. Now that same father and our club have coexisted for going on 21 years now. And it always brings a smile to my face to hear that kids story about that night hunting, shooting and later listening to that sorry mutt and slob find his deer. I guess it never hurts to do the right thing. That kids now a DNR agent with a history of ethical and moral judgements regarding hunting violations. I like to think that I may have made at least a small impression on him by what I did for him. Now I hope that some of you will understand where I'm coming from on this issue. I'm sure if I had been an A$$ he would have never forgotten it. |

Nautiduck..... I guess sitting in a tree for hours on end and waiting for a unknowing deer to cross your path is not Lazy and Slobbish as you lead me to believe Dog Hunting is. Is it truly sporting to shoot a creature that has no clue you are even there? Why dont you jump up and let him know you are there before you shoot giving him an opportunity to flee? Or be sure to shoot from a ground blind, at least then you'd have a better arguement for sporting. He could probably smell you better then and be on a level playing field. Dog hunting is a sport and those who actually know anything about it know how smart deer are and how they outsmart dogs regularly. In fact, not as many big bucks are killed in front of dogs because they know how to outsmart them. I have seen them do some amazing things. I still hunt and doghunt and I am successful at both. In fact two of my biggest deer were killed in a block stillhunting after dog driving the same block all day. Now if that excuse of running the deer out of an area was valid then they would not have been there. Its just not true that a hunt is ruined because dogs came through a tract.

What if you followed the dogs on foot or by bike? Most people just sit in stands all day. I'm not for or against dog hunting, but it is pretty cool to hear the dogs in the woods, see to deer pop out and go for a 300 yd. swim, and then see the dogs pop out hot on the trail and swim their azzes off right behind the deer. As long as it was all done on legal property? |
