Ashes

Ashes aka little green sprouts offer very few places to hide. No cover, no deer. well not many deer at best.

Just because you talk alot does not mean you know what you are talking about apparently...I burn my whole 1600acres every year before turkey season. It draws wildlife from all around.

Yes, my dogs used to get out once in a blue moon. The underground fence works great. Never had a horse out.

13 for 28 how many wounded and never recovered? Thats another thing that pisses me off about dog hunting. A bunch of morons emptying their guns at any deer that comes flying by at 30 miles an hour. Thats just not right.

Mike

Boys and girls, I agree that we dont all get along, I could debate this issue all day and it wouldnt do any good. I think that most dog hunters are ethical hunters(at least we are) but I realize that some are not. Around here we call them ditch bank hunters, they have no property that they lease but are seen around our farms and leases all the time. They'll dump out and drive to the other side hoping they'll push something out. We sign tresspass warrants on them all the time.
Now as far as still hunting and dog hunting is concerned, they can coexist if we try. I am not saying that regarding free ranging wild dogs. I have been in the stand many times watching deer and hear a pack coming only to see the deer in the fiels throw their heads up and listen to them. Then they would walk into the brush and after the pack passes they come right back to feed. I think its a common misconception that all the deer are run away and my hunt is ruined because a pack of dogs came within earshot. Its the hunter that thinks its ruined, stay in your stand and see if they will not come back in. Now I understand that if a pack jumps a deer around your stand thats different but these deer are not pushed out to never return(unless shot by hunter of course).
I do have a chocolate lab that roams around from time to time though, glad some of you boys dont live next to me, Im afraid he wouldnt come home. My little boy would hate to hear that.
I still say that we need to get along better and work together to enjoy our sports. Soon we will see an attack on all hunting, what will we do then, we will need each others help. There has to be a happy median somewhere.

That is flat out a great post.

For the record Joe and I worked out our issues and it ended up being a bit of a big misunderstanding. I think a few folks thought I had a dog I LET roam. Not the case, he was kept in a big back yard in Va Beach (out towards Sandbridge) that was surrounded by a 6' privacy fence. But he still managed to get out a couple of times a year while I was at work and he absolutely would not stay put when that happened. I blistered his ass and he still would do the Houdini and bebop around the neighborhood happy as a lark. That is why I made my original post. Strays and vicious dogs are a completely different situation and everyone has a right to protect themselves and their property.

I agree Anthony.

However I dont agree with Capt Mike calling all dog hunters morons. In fact I worry about some of the things he does while hunting, these are a few actions that I call would group as moronic.

Drove 90+mph down a newly graded rgavel road in Nebraska on a pheasant trip. I was cool until I hit a 50 foot patch the grader had taken a holiday blazer spins sideways and hits the ditch, approximately 16 flips later down a 45 degree hill I walked away with a few scrapes.

or,
I had a problem with people tresspassing on family land in Ms. to fish our 4 big ponds that were full of crappie, big ones. I got sick of it and was 16 and would come flying over the hill next to the ponds firing a clip of .22's up in the air. One day they left 4 rods, a tackle box full of stuff, half a pill bottle full of crack(which went into the pond along with the weed next to it) and a whole stringer full of white perch along with a bucket full of minnows. I'll never forget them jumping over that dam. Had to be 15 feet to the creek below

or,
I caught two 14 year old kids taking the outboard off my homemade majek style flats skiff 3 years ago just after the law was passed and put three triple ought buckshot rounds within 2 feet of their feet...if I had not known who they were(neighbors kids)they would be no more...

That makes me wonder what would happen if "an owner" was walking down the trail in front of your blind.

I do not consider them mans best friend or their owners actual human beings

the owners are the ones at fault, but I'm not shooting their ass because I have a respect human life and there are laws against it

However, it could happen being you are hunting so close them them on your 1600 acres??

Problem is I hear staged dog fights every weekend from the stand!! I am not talking about afew strays...I mean a full fledged infestation!!!! I have shot myself over 50 in 6 years and I have no idea about the poison...100's I would guess

We hunt ducks, geese or any bird for that matter on the fly, foxes on the run, rabbits on the run, coons on the run, why not deer, that what they made buckshot for. Besides, when you see a deer run by, yell at it, he will stop and check you out. Its just hunting dude, Your big deer will still be there, I hope you get him this year too!

What if all these people got pissed that you were trolling for fish and said thats not fair and not right, you must anchor up and let the fish come to you, im sure you and others (including myself) would be upset.

IT'S AMAZING THIS DEER DOG THING HOW IT BRINGS OUT THE WORST OF US...

IF ONLY THE DOG OWNERS WOULD KEEP THEM ON LEASH OR ON THEIR OWN PROPERTY AND NOT INTERFERE WITH OTHERS RIGHTS.... THIS CONVERSATION ATTACKING ONE ANOTHER ON SFC WOULD HAVE NEVER TAKEN PLACE

I AM SORRY...BUT WHEN THIS HAPPENS ON MY LAND....AN APOLOGY IS NOT SUFFICIENT.....IF ONE IS SORRY THAT MERANS IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN.......3K FINE PER DAY FOR TRESSPASSING AND I COULD LIVE WITH IT.....

58 days!

To get back to the original post. Does anyone here enjoy hunting deer with dogs? There are 58 days left to the begining of our deer season and I am getting restless. Does anyone here have any hunting stories to share?
