NYBearHunter,

We have more in common than I thought, glad you posted back with a response. The way I hunt bear with hound's, brother I don't miss nuthin!!! I don't just walk up to him and shoot. I start it, stay with the dog's and the ruckus and am there when they stop em'. I'm not in a truck trying to head them off. Yes sometimes you'll get one that head's to the next county pretty quick. But I try my best to stay in the thick with them. It's not what alot of people think it is. A good case in point was a few year's back, we had a guy (a preacher) that was invited by someone to go along on the hunt. Well he show's up with his scoped rifle (which isn't any good at 10 yard's), they tell him to stick with me. After a quick conversation I ask him why he has a scoped rifle? His reply was kinda like, "aren't you gonna run the bear out and let me shoot him"? Ah Capt, that ain't how this work's. He's gonna stay in there and you've got to go to him!!! Needless to say, he did go "in there".
I've never hunted or been anywhere grizzlie's are. I've alway's wanted to go to Alaska, hope I do before it's all said and done. I'd like to hunt a Grizzly but don't know that I'd actually take one. I'd like to be able to say I got close enough to have done it. I'm not aware of anyone eating them, if you did what would you do with all that meat? I'm not against another man doing it, it's sort of killing something just to kill it. Not my cup of tea. You do hunt in a way that I never have, that's with a bow. I'm more of a gun guy, I like the kill to be quick as possible. Nothing like a clean head shot. The thing that you and I do share is the fact that we both better be good in our approach, and our ability to hunt and shoot, because we are both close to our quarry. By the way the biggest bear I've had any thing to do with is 660, taken at about 3 feet with a .357 revolver. Nothing macho intended, I didn't respond to this thread for quite awhile. Got nothing to prove and no one to impress. I hunt the way I do because I love the hunt, the kill is a very distant second. Frank

I started to make a comment on turkey hunting with dogs in PA being illegal but checked to make sure and of course it was legalized for the fall season in 2007 or '08. Shortly after I moved I didnt realize I had hit the post button before I checked and it wouldnt let me delete the whole post just the content and I had to have 8 characters hence "delete.". It had nothing to do with deer I made my personal feelings on that known. I dont like it but to each there own the biggest problem I have with it is people running their dogs on my property especially because its illegal in my part of the state.

Question; I have heard that beagles bark on the constant, is this true.
Maybe i do not understand this question. If you are asking do they constantly bark while running on the trail of a deer. Yes. They sound as if they are stuck in an electric fence. That is a good way to describe it. I gave a beagle to my dad to keep loose at the farm. He stayed in the yard until one day he jumped and ran one by himself. Dad did not know what was going on. He thought something had the dog in the woods killing him. Dad tried to get close to the dog so he could stop what was hurting him. Dad almost got ran over by the doe, right on her heels was Whiteside. He called me to share this with me. He was laughing at the fact he sounded like he was being attacked all the while he was really having a good time.

Now if you are asking if they just bark all the time, in the pen, in the truck, etc, no is the answer. They are like most any other dog when it comes to that. They just let their noses get them into trouble sometimes.

I have killed alot of bears, no need to say how many, and I have killed bears from 200 lbs up to 717lbs and everything in between, thats not counting the mighty Grizz. I have killed all of my bear with a compound bow, no guns at all, I have been charge, attacked, knocked down, run over, crawled along side by, knocked out of a tree a few times, been in ground blinds when they attacked the blind, spun around in a chair blind, had two cubs sit in the same tree stand with me, had my muck boots ripped off a few times, been left in a tree stand over night by an outfitter with bears all around me more than I would like to remember, and if that isn't enough I was fighting for my life when I used my climber and tied myself to the tree for safety when the bear climbed the tree after me and proceded to destoy my climbing stand with me in it and strapped to the tree, the moral of the story is; never tie off when hunting bears, I would rather die from the fall then to be ripped apart and thats coming to you with first hand information. I have hunted bears from pop ups, chair blinds, over bait ,up trees, hiding in the bush along trails, spot and stalk and even have dug pits to hide in along trails, tracked many wounded bear in bush that water couldn't reach the ground, I have had bear sit on my back trail waiting for me to return, I have hunted bait sites that were controlled by wolves try that one on for fun not to mention wolves always following you to the bait sites, and the hardest hunt was in Northern MN, hunting deep bogs and cedar tickets that you have to use a flash light at high noon with the sun shining bright and have that monster come up on you at six paces up a tree eight feet off the ground its the time when you remember your old prayers. So yes, I have been up and close and very personal with bears, but no dogs, ever.

DUDE.....PALEEESE .....NORTH CAROLINA IS THE SOUTH....DON'T EVEN TRY TO START THE WAR ALL OVER AGAIN BRO! A NEW YORKER TELLING THE WORLD THAT NORTH CAROLINA AIN'T THE SOUTH???? IF THAT AIN'T ABOUT THE DUMBEST THING I HAVE HEARD THIS WEEK! ....WHY THE GAUL OF IT!!! YOU ARE VERY NORTHERN AND VERY YANKEE AND WE ARE STILL ALL REBEL.....NOTHING HAS EVER CHANGED...

BUT I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR ABOUT MORE BEAR CHARGES IN A SEPERATE THREAD!!!

Hey There Marty,

Glad to see your still among the living. I was starting to think I was going to have to head to Argentina to go bear hunting in the "south". Kept me up all last night, thought I was lost for awhile. Frank

Your right, I have nothing to prove myself, it's all about hunting period.

I did try to eat grizz (brown bear, whatever) once and it was awful to say the least, to compare it to something would be real hard since i never ate something that bad before, they do eat the meat north of our border.

Hunting brown bear is something that you really have to try... your not hunting it to just kill it, your one on one with something really special it is a true trophy and the hunt is something that you will never forget, just being on the same special ground is enough for you to take notice to something you never had seen or done before, and if you don't do it right you will not get a second chance to try again. How can I say this without sounding like a fool to most... but hunting something that is hunting you and can make the kill better than you just keeps your mind moving at warp speed and the constant pounding of your heart in your ears, not to forget the big time jitters is something that you just have to experience for sure, if, you do get to make that kill you did something special to say the least, it's not a kill in the sense of killing it's the end to a real life experience...

Hunting with a bow is not for everyone but, it makes things harder on the playing field and there is nothing like being up close and personal like you have to be with that bow, seeing the look the game has when they realize they made a mistake is something for sure, you can tell alot about that animal at that time in space just by that look in their eyes, thats when I decide to let them walk or to put an end to it.

660 lb bear, thats a bear for sure, where did you get that, a true trophy. You just have to give alaska a try, I really believe it is the gateway to heaven, so beautiful, the game and the fishing is second to none, a true real life experience... you have me thinking about bear hunting with dogs I have to have a long talk with myself about it real soon, you have to let me know more about hunting bears in NC...

Pa, started hunting with dogs for turkey in the fall of last year.Pa, bear some of the best there is, how about where you lived any bear... Trespass here in NY is a thing that any hunter will regret for sure, you will pay dearly, they also have really tough laws for dogs running game...

I wasn't really clear on my question about beagles, people that have beagles here all have the same regret being, the dog is always barking at anything and always seem like they are always looking for something thats not there.

WOW, you really get excited at a moments notice for sure...

Stay calm man you will live alot longer and have more fun...

Where are those counties located in NC, I really would like to learn more about the bear there, and where to hunt them...

Now I have to add to my list of being charged by someone in NC, instead of a bear doing it...
