DEER ?
Don't know if this is the right place for this
Deer usually have their babies in the spring, correct.
So would a baby born in the spring be weaned already?
Reason I am asking, I have 2 little baby deer hanging around my yard. Been there for 2 days now. They look lost, like they're looking for mom. I have a feeling mom is at the butcher. The deer look like they just lost their spots.
I appreciate any insight, I don't want to kill them
Not there's anything wrong with that

Thanks

Women love me... fish fear me
could be at the butcher, or laying on the side of the road...odds are they are weened already....i have watched yearlings that still had spots munch on acorns while sitting in my stand....they might make it...then again they might not, usually the hunting seasons coincide with these young of the year deer being grown enough that they are not dependant on their mother.

I think Admin is going to let me have this space
most fawns are still nursing some from their mothers right now, but they are also feeding on the normal browse as well. We saw two nursing yesterday, but they also pigged out on apples, clover and corn too. If moma is gone, and the fawns have lost their spots, they will most likely be OK if predators don't get involved.

me llamo SUPER Dave
In a perfect ecosystem where the populations aren't out of whack you wouldn't see nearly as many spotted fawns this time of year. It takes the bucks too darn long to breed all of the does. Then again, weather patterns affect the breeding season too.
The little guys might make it, or they might not. A disease and or car will probably get them before a hunter.
They are nice and tender, but could use some corn for a few weeks before taking them out. It will firm up the meat.

Crab mustard is good
Thanks guys, they were laying by my shed this morning
We don't have to worry about a car taking them out
I live on a small road, hardly any traffic 20 mph speed limit
Dave you're funny, I couldn't kill them
I shot a deer once and felt horrible, I'm a puss
I was about the same size as these, didn't seem like it at the time
It was far away, shot it with an old 8mm British WW2 rifle
Dropped it where it stood
When I walked up to it I realized it was a little thing, looked bigger through the peep sight
You are right though, that damn thing was tender
I did qualify expert with an M-16 in the Army, I actually can shoot
Thanks again guys, we'll see what happens

FAWNS
One other thing which might have taken place is:
The mother may have run these two fawns off. Once the mother has weaned the fawns, she will run the male fawns off to fend for them self. She does this to help eliminate any cross breading.
I have sat many morning in the woods during Bow season and had small deer come in together with no momma (just lost their spots or some that still have slightly visible spots).
In most of these cases I have been able to determine the little ones were small button bucks.
While hunting or watching deer, you may be able to determine the sex of the small fawns. Typically a doe fawn will have a longer snout than the button bucks.
That’s my 2cents worth.
