I believe its a Winchester model 70. I have never shot it before, but my father in law used it every year.
The lighter loads might be the ticket-we hunt on my brother in laws farm. He has a swampy area that the deer hang in- which is a close shot. But he also has some long shots across corn fields too. I think all the ammo is 150 grain.
Is there any type of ammo manufacturer that is lighter with thier powder?
I know some of them load heavy- I'm just not sure with the 30-06 because I shoot a 7mm Rem Magnum.
I was using store bough cheap winchester 150's from a sports authority that didn't seem too bad. I would guess cheap and simple would be the right direction. I know Remmington makes "managed" or "reduced recoil" 12 guage... They may make them for the '06...
My experience with the '06 is all rounds that I have tried hit the same spot at a 100 yards. At 200 I get some extra drop (quite a bit) from the round nose brush 180's I shoot. I run federal 150 good stuff for the long stuff and talk about flat! Even the winchester chapies hold the line pretty good...
Barry, My first rifle was a 30-06. Remington 700, but about the same weight as a model 70. I bought it on my 14th birthday. (had to get my dad to sign for it cause some muslim shot Bobby Kennedy a couple years earlier). Anyway, that sombich rocked my world first time I shot it--- 10 or 12 rounds to sight it in and then ripped off the rest of the box just for fun. My shoulder was black and blue but I was out cleaning the ditches for Coke bottles to buy another box of shells the next day.
Point is, a 30-06 is a bit big for a youngen, but it's all realative. Kinda like getting a chance to be put in at middle linebacker and bring down that fullback twice as big as you--- some kids love it, others will run the other way. Only one way to find out--------
I was one of those kids. Goose hunting with the boys, I wanted a long range knock out shot gun. A 10 gauge marlin. Put me on my arse. I learned real quick what was coming at me. A solid stance or footing helps a lot. Mini mortars do knock geese into anothers flight path enabling a second shot
Today was a flip of a coin... There was enough northeast edge to the wind to pose a threat of a bumpy night swordin. As I intend to make my solo sword run a good one. I chose not to chance a blow up... I slid back to the "B" spot despite being a weekend.
Weekends in our swamp usually are frustrating wastes of time. The place gets real crowded in a hurry. Today would be no exception.
Diving past spot A there were a pile of buggy trailers there and I knew to just write that area off without even a quick scout.
Parking at the "B" spot, I could hear generators and see cars in the camp area. Despite that I was feeling that I could kick something out... Walking in, some kid in his daddys blazer came roaring down the trail looking like some throwback from the Dakar rally... Still I trecked deeper in thinking that whatever he spooked would possibly circle back in.
The little speedster had wrecked the trail for looking for tracks. The softer muddier ground near the watering holes had been covered with spray and wiped clean. I still took the long walk. Seeing nothing I began to slide back to where i had seen the most tracks a couple days ago.
Here came Mario Andretti again! This time he stopped and politely asked if I had seen anything. In the car with him were some younger kids and my guess would be that they were younger brothers or friends of a younger brother. Part of me wanted to go off but I had a kind moment... "Nope, its a bit tough sneaking up on critters with you running up and down here..."
He realized what he had been doing and was appologetic. I let it go... I didn't want to embarrass him in front of the kids. I could see he meant no harm. He asked where he should try to go and I sent him to a couple roads over and suggested that they sit one guy at the beginning then walk to another entrance to the same road. Leave one there then try a back and forth drive.
They left and I chose a spot for a sit. Minutes turned to hours with nothing remarkable except me discovering a new species of mosquito that I had not dealt with before. Damn! These things were as big as wasps and bit like hell! A buggy came from the far end and nothing had pushed my way so I decided to just give spot A a quick look before leaving.
As I walked in there a pickup came flying down that trail. The looked at me and I could see them laughing. A hundred yards later they planted their ride door deep in mud water and shit... They could see me laughing as I walked out.
Stopped at the check station on the way out and blabbered some with the checker and a wildlife officer. He was showing me his new buggy when the first group of kids showed up to check out. They hadn't scored but did jump a doe. They were just tickled pink and I felt good about not tearing them a new one...
