    DAG NABBIT!!!!!!!!

I think this is the first time I have ever killed a turkey and felt like crap the rest of the day. Here's what happened. I made a plan to work the night shift so Kay and I could hunt the middle of the day. Home by 8:00 and in the woods no later than 10:00. What I didn't count on was Murphy going in with me. You know, if it can wrong it will go wrong? Home by 11:00 AM was the best I could do. Kay had the mess ready and we threw it in the truck and off we went. After the drive, we climbed on the bikes, flushed one hen riding in, then some walking. We sat down at 1:00PM. It was spitting rain, something we had not put in the plan either. Same tree as Saturday, why quit on a winner. Kay sounded off with her box call. I hate to admit it but she calls better than I do. I swear she can put the majority of live hens to shame. She called every few minutes and we played the waiting game. It was HER turn, but the plan was the same if more than one came in, one, two, three BOOM! At 3:00 PM I see 3 black beach balls 100 yds out coming straight to us. Longbeards, all of them. I reach for Kay and in an instance she is around the tree beside me. They keep coming, not running but steady moving, red heads gleaming. It doesn't take long and they are 40 yds. They make 90 degree turn to the right and I whisper to Kay to count when she is ready. She says OK but two times in a row when she is ready, a tree is blocking me. The birds don't stop and they are about to cross the creek where it is super thick on the other side. About that time one of them "smells a bugger" and starts running. I tell Kay she better shoot but she has no shot. I can see one going up the hill and then I see one standing in some thick stuff at 40 yds. I shoot. The turkey fell in a depression, I thought I had missed as I saw another turkey running away. How could we let 3 longbeards get away? Kay looks at me kind of funny cause I'm just standing there belittled, usually I'm all over a downed bird. Then she asked if I was going to get him, and I saw the bird start to flop. She got to him before I did and made sure he didn't get away. Now I feel like crap, I have limited out, taken HER turn like I did last spring with a cobia. Maybe she'll forgive me. I hope the turkey gods will shine on her from now on. I'll be right there beside her if I don't have to work, and if I do, she'll probably go alone like she has many times before. This looks like a three year old, 20 lbs, 9 1/2" beard, 1 1/8" spurs.

    Pretty work Greg.

Sometimes you just have to take the shot given to you.

Last year my buddy Doug called in my first longbeard for me. There was a strutting boss tom and a following bird who just didn't have what it took to challenge the boss. Well I had to adjust and never got a chance on the boss, and had to take the smaller one. The kicker was Doug had a clear shot at the boss the whole time, but no gun!

Good luck Kay on the rest of your season.
