As earlier posted, I had an awesome day bear hunting yesterday. Two young teen's were with us that scored on their first bear's. Thought I would share this very common scenario that I've witnessed many times by folk's (young and old alike) that "think" they want to bear hunt till HE's just a few feet away (literally).
This was our second race of the morning and Nathan's cousin Cole had just taken his first bear about an hour earlier. I think Nathan is about 13 and Cole is about 12 year's old. We had a decent bear going and Chuck (Nathan's dad) was on top of thing's. Got Nathan and himself where they needed to be. And here He comes, oh crap He's close !!!!!
(Anyone that's hunted bear with hound's know's what they sound like, especially when he's coming right at you. It's not suttle by any means. I've had to side step many and even had to "hit the dirt" face down, in hopes that they'll just keep on goin' over top of you. They run and exhale quite loudly (making a whoofing sound), all the while busting through any brush in their way. It's an absolute adrenalin rush on the first order).
Nathan is standing there thinking he is READY until, the bear is just about face to face across a small ditch (not a canal), with hound's pretty close on his tail. The bear start's to jump the ditch, but there a kid in his way. The bear immediatley stand's up just feet away now from a now very nervous Nathan (they kinda look big at this moment, almost "super natural"). Nathan turns and say's to his dad (who is a very experience bear hunter and right beside him) in a rather loud and scared tone of voice "Dad I Don't Think I like Bear Huntin' Any More !!!!!". Up comes the gun and his shot was true and I guess the rest is hitory as they say. Well his first and maybe his last bear, but he was right next to Dad when he crossed that threshold of a young man's life. Doesn't get any more special than that! Frank
