Here in NC, light and variable seems to be the average but I do look at the primary wind direction when I decide where to hunt on any given day. I don't think all the fancy scent clothes/products can keep a deer from smelling you, but that is just my opinion. Watch the TV shows on deer hunting, even those sponsored by the scent product industry still recommend hunting down wind if they are truthful and some are. I can say this with confidence, if you "forget the wind and just hunt" I hope you are lucky. If you do and are really successful at it, I will get you to pick my lotto numbers.
On using lures, I have had some success in the rut, late Oct. thru Thanksgiving with usually a peak somewhere in the middle. When I am using scents, I usually hunt high, sometimes 25+ feet off the ground, which is where I preferr all the time. I preferr the doe in estrus scent.
On humid days, you will get busted much than dry days. On days where smoke hangs low instead of going up, so does your scent.
The less brush you touch going through the woods the better. Deer can smell where a limb brushed your pant leg for hours afterwards. I know for a fact a bear can smell it after 6 hours cause I watched them do it many times.
The best of luck in the upcoming season. I will be more than happy to give you my opinion on any bowhunting question you may have. Post away.
