I might be crazy
I might be crazy but I don't try to control my scent at all! All these fancy clothes and sprays and gloves and face mask's makes ya wonder how the indians ever survived?
Anyways I have never used scent control clothes I always use the wind to my favor and do a $h!t ton of scouting! But then again I have hunted the same area for 15 years now so I am kinda fortunate in that aspect! Some people like my perspective on this an some don't but this is my 2 cents for what it is worth! |

I dont go nuts with my regimin, i spray down with scent killer and hell i rarely get more than 15 feet off the ground..as long as i pick the right stand for the wind it usually pays off, also i hunt quite a few suburban backyards...theres no need for scent elimination there they are used to it , i cant tell you how many deer have bought the farm while i was 10' up the tree with a smoke hanging out of my mouth and a 10-15 yard shot.

I wash my clothes with baking soda and let them air dry outside. I either hang them on a covered porch, or out in the white pines in the backyard. Depends if it's gonna rain any time soon.
Last year I started wearing almost all Natural gear. I like the way it blends in with lighter tones and less shadow then the major brands. The stuff I have wasn't scent blocker and I can't say the deer noticed. Some days I wore my scent blocker stuff too. Depends on where I was and what my background looks like. I hunt a lock on that is 20' to the platform, and in my climber I try to go as high as possible. I don't go any set height, but I make sure I'm not in the line of sight for any approaching deer on a hillside, or coming over a knoll. I use a simple homemade spray to cover my clothing as I get dressed. I also get my rubber boots pretty good. Last year I messed with Cmere Deer on my feet just for fun and never noticed it spooking them. I got winded once that I can remember last year. A doe that was feeding across a fence for a while w/ a set of twins made it to about 8 yds and behind me and a little puff of wind sent her nose up in the air. She started stomping, she never really busted, but walked out on high alert with the little ones in tow. Little did she realize how many times that little green dot in my sight had been trained on her heart. You'll learn more and more about what you can and can't get away with on each hunt you go on. Keep a log of conditions and you'll learn even faster. I used to get a kick out of farting in my scent pants the first year I had them, 4 years later and I don't try that trick anymore. I think they wore out The comments about scent rising and falling with the thermals as the day moves on are VERY IMPORTANT. How are your groups shaping up? -D |

I have them within 3-4" out to 23 yards on my first pin. Once I figure which way i'm going with either a climber or tree sadle, I will start shooting from elevation just so I have it under my belt by the time the sept15th comes around. I plan on going to Macrotech over the weekend to have a whisker biscuit and kisser button installed so I can get things dialed in a little better and get my groupings tight out to 30 yards. Also going to check out climbers and the saddle while I'm there.
I have talked with a couple people (and read) that shooting out longer I.e. 40 and 50 yards will help tighten things up when you come back to twenty and closer. Whats everyones thoughts on this. does it work or is it a waste? Also I am assuming that changing rests to a whisker biscuit wont change my shooting progress much once the bow is re-sighted in, correct? Thanks again to everyone that has taken the time to answer my questions about all of this. Grilled some deer dogs and steaks at my sons party this weekend that just lighted the fire even more about this whole hunting bug!~ One last thing, how do you prevent ticks and mosquitos? -D

Dont forget a peep sight if you dont already have one, the peep with the kisser will ensure the same anchor point each time you shoot and definitly help with consistency, i have a 40,50 and 60 yard pin....shot a few does around 45 yards but that was on the ground, i can hit a decent group at 60 but its tough to judge that in the woods, with a flat shooting bow the diff between 20 and 35 yards is minimal.....if im off just a touch at 40 or 50 its a complete miss, but practice them all hell i just love shooting my bow ...gettin the boys together and walking a 50 target 3-d shoot is the best practice there is ...as far as keeping skeeters and ticks away..if you find a way that dont stink you up let me know would you, good luck and may your arrows fly straight. |

http://www.sawyerproducts.com/permethrin.htm
Permethrin is the only way to go for tick prevention. I used it last season and all turkey season and never had a tick on me. You treat your clothing with it at least 24 hrs before going out and it will last for 6 washings. I generally just re-apply after about a month of use since I don't really wash my outer wear unless I sweat too much or get wet/muddy. The Therma Cell is about the best way to keep skeeters away when on your stand/in blind. It's the most important part of equipment if you're hunting in skeeter country in Sept. They put off the scent of the chrysanthemum flower. I had a curious doe walk from 30 yds down wind to the base of my tree. The whole time her nose was going nuts trying to figure out that scent. If I wasn't hunting for horns that day she would have gotten a chest full of 50 cal powerbelt. I don't think the scent spooks them by any means. I don't mess with a kisser button. I just keep my anchor point in the same spot each time, and the tip of my nose hits my string. I believe what an old timer once said about kissers. "All they're gonna do is make you lose your concentration as you try and find the kisser. Practice enough and anchoring the bow will become second nature." No kisser has worked for me so far. I like 3 pins for sights around here. It's something like <28yds for my top pin. 40ish yds for my second pin, and 50 yds for my third pin. At 35 I go half way between the first and second and the same for 45 with my second and third. It really takes a steady hand to get good groups at 50 yds, and while you might not need it on Eastern Whitetails, there's no harm in practice. I'll make sure I'm grouping well out to 50 before heading west this year. My longest kill so far is 38.5 yds, and it was a groundhog. Hit the apple he was eating too. Sad part is I had just missed a simple shot at 24 yds b/c I forgot to bend at the waist. -D Last edited by Dave Sikorski; 06-30-2008 at 05:15 PM. |

We ended up getting a trophy taker drop away rest instead of a whisker biscuit. Len at macrotec talked me out of the biscut saying that I wold lose arrow speed as the arrow passed through the rest.
this is the rest i got http://www.trophytaker.com/xtremefc_ts.aspx Len is going to reset the bow "the way it should be set up" and hopefully I will be practicing by the weekend. -D

I just got my first drop away rest. I also knocked 6 arrows w/ blazer vanes last night. My groups today were downright sick.
Sighted in to 30 yds w/ 4 outta 6 touching. It's downright sick. -D |
