Come on Beretta I just want them to shoot

No fu fu country club guns on this thread--- I'm talking about Beretta's AL391 Urika 2.
I bought two of these units last thanksgiving for each of my boys. The price was $900 and change for each.
Son #2's gun has given him problems from day 1--- slow bolt and failure to cycle properly. Being a Silver Mallard AL390 shooter, I just KNEW the problem was the return spring in the stock, so I bought a Sure Cylce stainless spring for $160 to be done with this forever ( sure has worked well in my 390). I did not contact Beretta at that time because the springs they use are garbage anyway and I was positive (I thought) of the problem.
This Monday, son #1's gun started with the same mess, so I told him we'll get the new spring for his gun as well.
This week, the gun with the new spring started acting up--- same problem as before. I called Beretta and after being put on hold for eternity, was told that the gun is out of warrany (1 year)--- it's been 13 mths. I didn't even argue with the guy.
Perhaps, I'm asking too much but I just think it is a good idea that when you pay almost a grand for a shotgun, it is not too much to ask for it to go bang when you pull the trigger.
Obviously, there is some friction between the bolt and receiver. I can't feel any burrs so I'll try polishing the reciever tracks and bolt rails tonight and see what happens. I don't have any jewelers rougue (sp), so I guess I'll try 0000 steel wool and automotive polishing compound.
My new fu fu O/U may be of the hoyty toyty type, but one thing I can say--- it has a lifetime warranty--- if it don't shoot or operate properly (ever, for any reason) Caesar Guerini will fix it on their dime--- hell, all I'm asking of Beretta is for 1 year old guns with less than 400 rounds through them to work.

    Vent over----

Sorry for your problems.. Quality control in those factories isn't that good from what i've seen.

I have had three different Berettas and loved all of them. No problems that I didn't bring on myself!! That being said, you are not the first person that has had problems with a thousand $ gun. My friend got a Benelli (sister company) and has had nothing but problems with it.

I learned the same lesson the hard way, if you have a problem with something, contact the company ASAP... I know its a pain in the butt to send it off and wait the eternity for it to return, but its the only way to get the problems resolved without $$ out of pocket.

Does the bolt get slow about half way back?

My extrema had a slow bolt and it drove me mad until I took a good look at the trigger assembly.

There's a lever in there that the bottom of the bolt hits. I took some 220 or some sort of light grit sand paper and sanded that sucker down until it stopped slowing the bolt.

    Voila....3+ seasons of easy operation.

Also, switch to Break Free CLP for cleaning. It's the best stuff out there.

It's s damn sham Glen that a company like Beretta does not stand behind there guns any better than that. I see this all to often in my blinds with both Beretta and Benelli, I feel sorry for the guys that have it happen to them. The look on their face is pricless though when I hand them my 1964 A5 Browning humpy to shoot...

You are so correct--- I knew I should have sent the one gun back to Beretta last winter but just didn't want the hassle--- my bad in that regard.

    Dave,
I would have never thought of the trigger catch---- I'll look at it this evening. Here's what I don't understand:--- I put both guns in the freezer for a couple of hours when I got home from work today. Pulled the frozen guns out and they work perfect. Dripped some water on them good inside the receiver, and still no hickups with the bolt---- tonight anyway. Damnifino, I purposely did not clean the guns from the last hunt so I can inspect them good--- , as rough as I am on my guns, I do keep them spotless clean.
BTW, I do use Break Free CLP.--- a little dab will do ya then wiped off.

Yes, I know Tom. My 390 has been like a Timex watch for 15 years--- I have used and abused that gun and it has only let me down 1 time. This was two years ago when the return spring finally rustd to the point it didn't work properly. I have litrally used this gun as a paddle and I don't think there was ever a single hunt that the gun did not get wet inside. I never removed the stock to service or clean the return spring in 13 years. No one could possibly ask more of any firearm as far as dependability is concerned.

I still don't know exactly what is going on with these two 391's---- I now know it is somehere in the trigger assembly and bolt. That is, if I remove the trigger assembly there is absolutly no resistance felt ( even when frozen). When I put in the trigger, I can feel a slight resistance somewhere when the bolt return forward to close the chamber. I filed (sanded)the latch that Dave refered to but I can still feel something snagging a little. My next step is to dust the trigger assembly w/ chalk to find the exact catching point.

BTW, if anyone hears of a used AL390 w/ 28" barrels for sale in good condition, let me know as I will buy it on the spot--- must be a hump back Silver Mallard and not the Wally World version or 3901.

    Sikorski is the man!
After sanding a little on the lever Dave referred to, Son #1's gun operated flawless yesterday in the snow & sleet. Son
#2's gun failed to cycle 1 time and a dab of Break Free to the bottom of the bolt kept him shooting the rest of the day.
This confirms that the problem is w/ the bottom of the bolt and/or the lever. Now I just need to chalk it up to find out exactly where it is catching.

On another note, Ya'll will get another chuckle at my expense regarding the "fancy" shooting club O/U I recently bought. Last night I decided to rub a light coat of linseed oil into the new gun (This manufacturer uses 100% Boiled linseed oil for its finish). Son #1's girlfriend had her 12 week old puppy with her at the house. I set the forearm down on the floor and as I was rubbing the butt stock, the puppy found a new chew toy. so much for the "as new" value of the gun. At least now I can just go out an enjoy the gun without worrying about a scratch.
