Cold Winter?

Stopped by the butcher who cuts up alot of deer to see how things were going. He said he had 40 or so come in since opening day, pretty good start. He said there have been more fat on the deer this year then any he can remember. He showed me three brought in from yesterday that must have had at least an inch of fat across their backs. I asked if they were from the same area and or same party and he said no.

Any of you guys that have taken one this year noticed this?

Good sign,

of things to come. I've always paid attention to the 8 to 10 deer we take to supply our meat for the year. It's my experience that the fat content on deer and bear, end up being pretty good forecasters of weather to come. Density if hair is another give away. We still heat with wood (wood only) and I use this to gauge the amount of wood I have ready for the coming year, I've not been sorry yet.Frank

Ill have to see how they dress out up this way, I heat with wood only as well...looks like I may have to bump it up to ten or twelve cords for this year....

My mate stated he saw more fat than usual on the ones he has taken this season... Down here I'm seeing the gulf stream move a bit slower. Its actually driven by polar ice cap melt that slides down the other side of the Atlantic into the Pacific and "sucks" the stream along rather than it "push". I also noticed even back in August the first signs of trees turning up north. Much earlier than normal...

We have had a good acorn crop and I am in farm country. It was a good summer regarding rain so just about all the crops did well. I am hoping that is the case and not a super cold winter. It has been warmer then normal at least in MD so far which may lend to the argument of a good growing season.
Just wondering if you guys noticed the same thing.

I have noticed the squirrels seem to have thicker tails this year.

I hope the temps hover around 33-38 from Christmas until Feb 1

There's nothing worse then a unseasonably warm winter.

Since that is all i have been seeing in the stand I have to agree here with Dave. Those squirrel tails are very "bushy" this year. I'll let ya know on the fat content once i stick one!
