    A Christmas Story

There were no trophies killed, no trips to Alaska or Upper Canada, not even a hunting lodge was involved--- but my brother-in-law just had the hunt of his lifetime. One that he will remember and tell his buddies about for the rest of his days.
My Bro-in-law has lived in Florida for 14 years and has not touched a gun since moving to the plywood state. Originally from Illinois, he grew up scaring up rabbits in broom straw fields with an occational deer hunt and limited results. A year and a half ago, he had a stroke that forced his retirement and for the most part he has been sitting at home bored out of his gord. Well, he came up to visit this week and I promised him some deer hunting on our lease in Tarboro.
Butch ( bro-in-Law) is on his way back to the greater Orlando area as I type with a 180 qt cooler packed to the brim with venison and a grin from ear to ear--- here is a recap of my buddy's hunt---
Wed afternoon we meet up with Marty at the farm. True as always, the Big Dog had the stands properly corned and fully scouted. What ever it takes we were going to put Butch on a deer. Marty suggested a particular tree stand in a field, so I handed him my 30-06 and got him situated (I opted for the cannon since he has never killed a deer with a rifle and figured if nothing else--- well, kinda like playing horse shoes if ya know what I mean). Marty and I go off to do a Video with stick and string (imagine that). 3/4 mile away @1645---- BOOOM!. Call to butch--"well?"
"Shit, I missed." No worries, still pleanty of time till dark.
1710-- BOOM-----BOOM---- BOOOM----BOOOOOOOOM!!!! Da Box busted our stealth by not being able to hold in the giggle. Phone call to Butch----"Well?"" "@$#^&^%5, I can't believe I missed again, I know I was right on her ass" Day One, Butch has seen 3 deer, and got shots at two---- no meat, but is was on top of the world.
Thursday afternoon--- Plan B. Perhaps a shotgun stand is better suited, so I put Butch in a ground blind with a corn pile 33 yds away. We explained the deer will come out in the field and meander to the corn pile, so wait till he is in range and starts feeding. 1700----- Boom, Boom. No joy--- sometimes its hard to have the patience to wait
Friday afternoon--- Put butch in yet another ground blind, but this time give him the .243. I know this will split the hairs on a nat's ass and vitually no recoil to worry about. I climed a tree stand in the field to provide backup if need be. 1650 a deer walks out into the field--- 110 yd shot and BOOM--- LITTLE BUCK DOWN!!!!!
Sat. Afternoon, back to the lucky stand--- 1712--- BOOM!!!----------------------------------Wonder if he got him ( I was in a different spot and couldn't see what was going on)----------- BOOM----------BOOOM, BOOOM,, BOOOM, BOOOM!!!!
Gezus thrice---- what in the hell is he doing?----
    Two does down.
Four hunts on consecutive days, a shot at at least one deer every single day, and killed three deer---- my bo-in-law is in hunter's heaven and has enough deer meat to feed the entire neighborhood (we left the hide, hoofs, and most of the soft organs---- everything else was dressed, butchered and packed into his cooleer--- 6 hams, 5 shoulders, 6 backstraps, 3 neck roasts, 5 tenderloins, and enough ribs to build a house.
What a wonderfull 4 days it was in Tarboro.---- and who says you need a 24 inch spread to have a trophy hunt?

Those are the best kind - Kinda like catching pinfish at the dock for a bunch of kids - It ain't the size that always matters.

    Cool
