CANT WAIT FOR THE SUNFLOWER BUCK...

thats what Im gonn a call him. Yesterday Dad and I were cuttin up some land to plant some sunflowers for the deer. After goin over it a couple times we pulled out and started putting the seed out with a hand whirly bird. I didnt make one pass when I heard something tearing the bushes to my left. I turned to look and a 10 point buck in full velvet leaped into the patch and ran a circle around me. Once he realized I was there he didnt know what to do, so he just stood there as surprised as I was. My dad went to laughin and he turned to look at him then he hoped back the way he come in no hurry. Was a fine buck too, probably not a shooter this year, he was probably 15 inches wide. Maybe thats a good sign for this patch.

Sounds like a nice deer Ace. What do you consider a shooter in your area? Around here most folks would take just about any 10 pointer, especially a fine one.

we have a decent sized farm with several thousand acres of timberland on three outa five sides with the other being farm land. We see a lot of bucks. Dad and I try to manage for bigger bucks. Normally a shooter for us is a 18+ inch buck at least 4 years old Over the years we have killed several from 18 to 21 inches here. You dont get one every year but you see this class of buck every couple of years. We know most of the bucks that frequent the farm, but every now and then one will show out of nowhere. To us the points is not really a determination of whether hes a shooter or not. We look at width, mass and body size and age. I dont want to kill a 10 pointer with 17 inches of width that might be 3 years old. Its when hes 4 and 5 years old that hes at his peak. We do cull some bucks that are smaller but normally because of genetics or injury or numbers of deer. I'll post up some pictures of my Dad and Uncles Trophy room. My uncle mounts alot of them, dad mounts some but now he mostly just keeps the horns.
