    Black Rifles?

Who has some info on AR-15 variations and what's good, or more importantly what's good to avoid. I'm thinking about starting to build one in .223 and maybe one in .308.

    Thoughts?

Nah, I'd rather beat them with ideas and the truth.

Figure it's about time I buy one. I don't think Barry and his friends will ban them, but you never know. Always wanted one anyway and could always use another rifle.

other than that just trying to stay warm.

Yo fellas. Good topic Dave. I'm just learning all the AR-15 mess myself. The guy at my local shop says Colt is the standard by which all the others are held to, but this is also the guy trying to sell Colt, so who knows. I am under the impression that most law enforcement and military black rifles are Colt. True?

Either way, like you said, even if they don't ban them, why not have one. I think the main thing is to stock up on mags, if they put the 10 round BS back in action you'll be pissed when you have to spend $200 for a used plastic 30 round mag. The H&K mags for the AR-15's are badass, although they are like 50 bucks, they are the ones to get.

Maybe it's just me, but I have a funny feeling that if Sikorski ends up with an AR, it's gonna be popping out of a duck blind eventually.

my buddy just bought the remington verison I think its the R-15 or something like that....it is a pretty cool weapon....doesn't have a sight rail like the regular AR-15 but none the less they are pretty cool.

Rock River Arms would be my first choice for a complete rifle...the Colt, Remmy, and S&W would be in a dead heat for last...biggest thing is going to be caliber...are you going to be punching paper, hunting, long range work...all those factors need to be addressed...otherwise you get something thats not quite what you wanted it to be...a 223 would be a good place to start...although for hunting in some states a 223 might not be legal...keep in mind a caliber change is all in how fast you can switch uppers...I would also look into a 6.5 Grendel or 6.8SPC...

If those that have thought about getting something black don't act quick... they will be paying 5 times the amount IF they find someone who will part with one.

Me... I went with the Smith & Wesson M&P in .223. Very high quality and deadnutz accurate out of the box.

My first choice was something from Rock River Arms... but they were at a 2 month wait 6 months ago. Second choice (and I'm glad I got it) was the S&W.

From my research, you will pay more for the Colt name... and some of the others do not use the barrels or trigger groups of the nice ones, but for the most part, Bushmaster, Stag, DPMS, most of them... are pretty much the same. It is the barrels and triggers that really make the difference.

What is amazing is here in Texas, the ammo shelves and reloading shelves at EVERY retailer is cleaned out as if they are going out of business. I asked the folks at one large retailer last week what the heck...are you getting out of the gun business? Their response was since the election, the shelves have been cleaned out (and I mean every cal. of ammo). This is at a retailer that the ammo isles are 30 yds long on both sides for two isles!!! NOTHING left, not even .22 cal!!!

I have been buying 30 round magazines and all the .223 I can find. Also, be sure to pickup ammo for your favorite handgun.

It was very eye opening (and a little scary) to see this ... and I am very pro-gun, pro black gun.

I am going to add the .308 as well to the collection.

    Get them now!

You cant beat Rock River. Pete at Legal Transfers is by far the cheapest online retailer you will find. He doesnt seem to be gouging like many others in the firearms indusrtry since the election, however most RRA complete rifles were 16 to 18 weeks out when I checked back in Nov. My next choice would be DPMS they have great products and excellent customer service. Rguns.net is one of the cheaper retailers for all things DPMS. Colt makes a good AR but I dont think the quality is as good as it used to be and some of their models have non standard FCG pins. Armalite also makes a great gun Bushmaster is overpriced for what you get IMO.

If your set on the .223 Caliber, Midway USA had a great sale going on them last time I looked, Stoner 30's were about 10 bucks each. If your wanting to build a long range shooter one of the first things to consider is a trigger, Geissele makes the best trigger pack that money can buy PERIOD.

Dave this is something I can help you with.
For the.223/5.56 there are several levels of guns. For Top tier Colt and LMT are your choices. What makes them the top is they use 4150 instead of 4140 steel to make the barrels plus the bolts and barrels are magnufluxed to check for micro cracks. The sight bases are properly pinned and the key on the bolt carrier is staked to milspec.
The next level incorporates companies like Stag,Rock River,S&W,Armalite. They do things about 95% as good as the first two and aside from checking the staking on the key you will probably never have an issue.
The final level is the fly by night and shotgun news specials.I will only say that the AR direct impingement platform requires precise manufacturing tollerances. These companies are lacking.Examples are Model 1 sales,JT distributors and a few others.A few other common names that have suffered quality control issues are Bushmaster and Olympic I would stay away.
I'm assuming you are taliking about a carbine atleast in the .223 so a couple of things to make sure of.Make sure it is a chrome lined bore not just a chromoly barrel. Also make sure it utilizes the current m4 feed ramp cuts. And if it does not come with it replace the standard carbine buffer with an H buffer.Get a flattop variation so if you want any type of optics it will make your life much easier.
When it comes to .308/7.62 you basically have two choices Armalite and DPMS of the two Armalite is the better product (by a good bit)but both are decent. There are a few other choices but I would'nt go past these two for various reasons. If you have any other questions feel fre to pm me and I can give you my #.
