As you may or may not know. When it comes to hunting I blam my fair share of stuff but when it comes to the finer points I don't know diddly. This place always seems to come up with good answers so I'll let this one fly.
My neighborhood as a kid never dreamed of seeing a deer. A few years back something happened and next thing you know they're here thick. Since its upscale small estate mansions and stuff legal hunting spots are at a minimum if non existant. That doesn't slow down the ol Deep though.
I know we have a pile of deer here. Really close by there are two big does, a medium size one and a giant one that you could call really close residents. We also have two bucks a six and a beefy ten.
There is a slob eight a little further from here and the most magnificent 12 or maybe even 14 pointer you could hope to see that kind of cruise a three mile long corridor.
My dream would be to nail one in my back yard but blood trails and it droppin dead at the neighbor kids swing set has me thinking twice. So instead I did a little scouting in a spot I could possibly get a bow in. When I was out I found two big oaks with what appears to be rubs on them. Big time bark wreckage at about the right hight.
My question: Do deer rub big trees? If so does this mean that they are big slobs or could it be just one of my two locals?
I've seen rubs/scratches over my head on a telephone pole. I'm 6'3 and upon closer inspection, realized that mr. Black Bear was cleaning his nails. Double check. You might realize you are taking a knife to a gun fight.
These definately look like rubs... Big ol oaks probably 16-18" stuff... My cats claw wood and it leaves a different pattern than a rub does so I don't think its claws...
Paul,
Does it look like a rub? I've seen them rub trees up to that size, but from what I have seen I'd say it a big boy doing that rub! It has to be a wide one to get around that size of tree.
It sounds like to me you need me to come check that out for you. I could have a full detailed report completed by say late November. YES, big deer rub big trees. They also rub small trees but small deer rarely rub big trees. One buck can make 200 rubs in just a couple days.
Ive seen rubs on trees that big, as a matter of fact i hunted a rub line last year and there was not a tree in that line that was not at least 16" in diamater, that deer was a bruiser of a 10 pt that must have had 9 lives because that some ***** is lucky i couldnt shoot a gun there...made me seriously think about making a silencer for a 410 shotgun and plugging him with a 410 slug.....but that would be outlawing and thats not my style.....but he made me think about it thats for sure. This deer stayed just out of bow range on at least 6 different occasions, never came in and taunted me on many an evening. He did get within range once....snuck right in the backdoor while i was contimplating plugging a nice 8pt and then i heard the last thing any hunter wants to hear.....whoooshhhhttt, yup he sniffed me out and that was it ...last time i saw him.
