Where is Swancaller to help me with this????
A couple of years ago Box and I were talking about bears in Carteret County (Eastern NC). I told him I saw a big sombich on Route 70 near Kinston. He said he heard of an 800 pounder killed in Carteret County a few years back
Yea right, and I caught 700 YFT this year----
Anyway, I was at Stuart's Hunting Lodge a few weeks ago in Currituck County ( also Eastern Carolina) and the guys got to talking about bears. Sure enough, talk of 800 pounders.
Well Watson Stuart doesn't take too kindly to disbelief of his hunting stories so he marched my butt up to his house to showed me his full mount 690 pounder. Not a major trophy by eastern NC standards, but it was his biggest (and he's not even a bear hunter).
I asked why they got so big and the general consensus is that thaey don't hibernate like in colder regions.
Either way, a 700 - 800 lb Black bear is one Big, mean SOB.

THERE ARE DEFINITELY SOME BIG BOARS IN EASTERN NC ....LET THERE BE NO MISTAKE ABOUT IT....AND THEY DO NOT HIBERANTE HERE

HECK THERE IS A SIX WEEK KILL SEASON IN MY HOME COUNTY


AND TWO BEARS WERE KILLED VERY NEAR YOUR OWN LEASE RECENTLY .....JUST INSIDE THE PITT CO LINE

If I remember correctly the biggest black bear taken was killed in/near Vanceboro some years back 1998 it was 880 lbs. It was dragging hog carcusses out of a container. The bear was big in the pictures I saw, its skin was so stretched over its hindquaters there were blad spots.

Hey fellas-

Do any of you know of an outfitter that does bear hunts in eastern N.C.? I've been wanting to do that for a long time and haven't had much success finding a reputable guide there in big bear country. Thanks if you can help-G.L.

Check with Charlie Dunbar. I don't know for sure if he is a guide but he gets some nice bear out there. PM me for his contact info.
He and I both breed hounds. He's in NC and I'm in CA.
