Went with my dad as a "retriever" on my first dove hunt when I was around 6. Never started really shooting until 16. We have had some fantastic dove hunts over the years. YESTERDAY was the best ever and I only bagged 5.
The anticipation started over a week ago when we chopped the main field and the doves where thick without any manipulation. Yesterday the deer burgers and sausage was the starter then a safety speach and a prayer and off to the field. My dad "Popsy", daughter Caroline 5, Wil 7 and I hunted together. This would be Wil's first "shooting" Dove hunt, Caroline took over retriever duty. The idea was that Popsy coverd the flank and Wil and I shared forward. He would get one shell at a time in a pump .410 and he would get a shot then it would be my turn. Took Wil about 20 minutes to actually pull the trigger the first time, plenty of follow through practice. No feathers with his first shot then I got to shoot and got one. Then his turn again. Missed the first 5 and I only got the one. Then he hit. WOW!!! he got one. Then he got another one "WOH HOOT HOLLAR" then another one "WOOPY HOOT HOLLAR". I was so excited I stopped shooting and it was all Wil. Popsy had his limit in about an hour so he took over hanging with Wil yet I still was paying to close attention to him getting birds to really shoot.
Final tally Wil got 8 with about 35 shots. Popsy had 12 and I ended with 5 in hand. BEST DOVE HUNT EVER......
The field had a total of 250. Only shot the field from 2 to 4. Should be a few more good hunts left there.
