been hitting it hard but still no payday

Haven't posted much lately cause I have been taking every free moment and venturing out in search of nailing my first deer. Since my fishing opportunities/jobs have been next to nill this season I have jumped in both feet into the quest of bow hunting. I have been trying to put the time into it before the baby gets here at the end of the month.

Since the Thursday after the opener i have been in the stand 8 days (morning, evenings or both) and also spent many hours scouting areas on Sundays.

I have seen deer on some of the sittings and have had times where just the tree rats have been driving me nuts (those little bastards are lucky that I have no interest in eating them!)

Just a little background: I am hunting a public spot that has seen other hunters but In my limited opinion is not over saturated with hunters. I have chosen up to this point to work only this area as I want to know it like the back of my hand. I have hunted different stand locations as I have progressed in what I have learned of the area I am hunting. Baiting is not allowed on public land so I'm sure this has made my quest a little harder. In each stand location I have tried to get at east 18' up and in the last two hunts (and at sikorski's urging) I have climbed to 24'. I have no found a nice stand of white oaks that have and are currently dropping a chit load of acorns and that is where I have been setting up lately.

Last Friday evening I got the closest so far as I had a fairly decent sized doe sneak up behind me and come as close to 7 yrds. Since she did not come up the trails that I was set on I didn't see or hear her until she was about 15 yrds out. I was able to get my bow off the hook, stand and turn. However, just as I placed my left foot in from of me to begin to draw, she was withing 7 yrds quarter to me and heard the stand creek against the tree as I put weight on my left front foot. At that point she had not smelled me but the sound was enough for her to run out about 35 yards and make a huge 240 arc around me keeping out about 40-50 yrds. She would take 5 or so steps and stick her nose up in the air and than move a couple more steps and repeat.

Well that's what I have been up to and will continue at it till momma pulls in the rains or the baby arrives!

Hope everyone is having a great season so far!

-D

keep at it

Taking your first deer with a bow is truly an accomplishment. Your heart will be racing when you go to draw it. You'll be hooked once you get one.

Keep at it you will get your shot. Your best days are still ahead. The rut and cooler weather will get them moving.
I would continue going high, the public land hunting is tough and the deer use their nose (and all their senses) much more.
Best of luck - Rob

Definitely keep at it!! It is awesome to take your first deer with the bow! I shot my first one after it woke me up! Maybe you should try taking a nap!
But either way, just be glad to be able to get out in the woods! Look forward to seeing pictures of that first one!

Good Luck!

Cappy-D, put the time in and the odds grow greater in your favor every day. Take BOX up on his offer..Im still working on the logistics of making a run down there myself....if the deer are in rut down there try using some scent bombs with tinks 69...I had my first deer a nice eight pointer come right in to scent. Good luck-

Stick With It

Capt. D Stick with it. I am going into the woods this afternoon. Acorns are dropping hard round here. Deer are moving in the last couple of days fairly well. Public Land hunting is kind of a pain, but if you stick with it in hopes to stick your first one with a bow, you'll be in there at the right time. Cool Pics by the way. Hang in there brother. He'll walk in on you when you least expect it. Monday Sept. 29th afternoon during that Northeaster, I got off work early and went got simply covered up, only saw 1 rack, never shot a deer but total saw 19 including 6 fawns. Tried drawling back on a fat doe with no fawns with her, but I got busted with a slick head walking up down wind on my back side, oh well I couldn't hear her with the wind swirling. But my heart was jumping anyway. Its still a blast everytime I go. Taking the old smoke pole tonight to hunt an open area about 200 yards deep in the sticks on the acorn drop ridge, so we will see what happens. Stick in there and good luck!!
