A hunting season is proposed of not more than 60 days between September 27, 2008, and January 25, 2009. The proposed daily bag limit is six and may include no more than four mallards (two hens), three wood ducks, two redheads, two hooded mergansers, one black duck, one pintail, one mottled duck, one fulvous whistling duck, and four scoters. The season on harlequin ducks and canvasbacks is closed. A hybrid regulation for scaup would be allowed, consisting of a two-bird bag limit for any 20 consecutive hunting days and one scaup per day for the remainder of the season.
The can numbers dropped according to biologist, i personally think their just not using their normal breeding grounds due to water.
What do you all think..i mean come on lay out hunting for divers is about pointless this year.
Go figure--- I go out and get all set up to layout hunt, line up another 4 dozen diver plugs and they say have fun.
On a brighter note, I read the nesting survey that just came out ( the the NWS web-site). This survey is from May early June and represents habitat for nesting--- not nesting success. In any event, even though the Souther praries are dry, the entire Northern areas have pleanty of water. So, Mid-Western birds may be downa little but not too bad from the high success of last year. The best news (for the Atlantic Flyway) is that the Eastern Provinces, including Ontario has the best water conditions in many years---- so hopefully another good Wood Duck, Mallard, GW teal and Black duck season ahead.
I guess it'll all depend on nesting success during July and August.
