Dear Friends,
We are forwarding this alert from Barbara, a former APLNJ member who now lives in South Carolina and is trying to stop the expansion of black bear hunting down there.
Please email the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources Board Members (six of whom are hunters) at strouda@dnr.sc.gov by September 9.
Here is a link to an article with more information: http://www.carolinalive.com/news/sto...8#.TmIr7WHeFlk. Additionally, Barbara's Letter to the Editor, which is running in the Sun News on Thursday, with more background information is copied below.
But, you don't have to know all the facts to tell the DNR, NO BEAR HUNT ON THE COAST, and they should ban it in the mountains too.
Thank you!
====================
No Bear Hunt Necessary Here!
The SC Department of Natural Resources (DNR) plans to initiate bear hunting in three coastal counties -- just for the fun of it -- for the first time since 1959. This is a TROPHY HUNT, pure and simple, as confirmed by News Channel 15 (ABC) [1] which quotes DNR officials stating on August 31 "the study was not to see if we needed a hunt, but if we could have a hunting season;" and that "the (30 bears) are being hunted for meat and fur." This is both absurd and outrageous.
The DNR Board proposed on August 18 a two-week bear hunt and intends to approve it at a board meeting less than a month later -- leaving almost no time for the public to express its opinion. At the August 31 DNR information meeting on this topic, which I attended, the North Coast Director of The Coastal Conservation League said DNR's recent three-year coastal bear study (conducted by a University of Tennessee professor and paid for with tax payer dollars) was being misrepresented and "used as an excuse to have a bear hunt." A representative of Wildlife Action, Inc., a pro-hunting group, also said, "We want to see more data" before a hunt. I say the proposed token trophy hunt is for DNR to get a foot in the door to allow extensive hunting and destruction of our coastal bears in the future.
STOP THE BEAR HUNT: Sun News readers can comment to the seven DNR Board members (six of whom are hunters) by emailing strouda@dnr.sc.gov by September 9.
DNR counted more than 70 different bears in two wildlife areas in Horry and Georgetown counties between 2008 and 2010. DNR's draft Bear Management Strategy indicates bs bear sr sightings increased statewide during the last decade (in part due to drought which brings bears out of the woods) -- sightings that include people who reported because they were thrilled to see a bear! In 2009, in the whole state there were only about 460 bear "encounters" with humans, and two-thirds of these were caused by humans attracting bears with their garbage, pet food and bird feeders: It is against the law in SC to feed bears, even inadvertently.
The Bear Facts: Black bears are timid and non-confrontational, says Lynn L. Rogers, PhD., who has studied bears in the wild for 44 years (go to bearstudy.org). He says [2] you are more likely to die from bees or a dog or spider or lightning or a vending-machine accident than from a black bear -- and 90,000 times more likely to be murdered. In the last 100+ years in all of North America, less than 40 deaths were due to a black bear, and most of those happened in the deep forest of Canada where bears rarely see people. I studied bears with Dr. Rogers in MN, where it is legal to feed bears, and I have met and fed dozens of bears by hand in the deep woods and heard them communicate with each other -- the most fun I ever had. If you want to scare away a bear, just shout and stomp your foot and clap your hands, and s/he's outta there! Black bears are the third most intelligent mammal -- after (some) humans and chimps. It is unconscionable to hunt these creatures. No one needs to kill a bear for food or fur in 2011; the only reason is for a trophy…a hunter killing a timid, intelligent, beautiful creature just for fun. STOP THE HUNT IN HORRY COUNTY.

NYBH,
I hog hunt in Horry County. While I haven't seen nearly the sign of bear that I see around here, there are bear there. Just set up for hogs in a back woods section away from roads and you'll see'em pretty quick. On a positive note, folk's have been known to disappear in the "Low Country" Swamps. If she's looking for a fight, she get one there. Frank

FRANK, I KNOW THAT WOMAN PERSONALLY, I WENT FACE TO FACE WITH HER LAST YEAR ON THE COURTHOUSE STEPS LAST DECEMBER IN OUR BATTLE AGAINST THEM TO HUNT BEAR IN NJ, SHE IS SOMETHING LIKE I HAVE NEVER SEEN, WHEN WE WON THE DECISION THAT NIGHT SHE SPIT ON MY CAMO JACKET THAT I WAS WEARING AND WISHED ALL THE BAD THE WORLD HAD TO OFFER ON MY HEAD, IT WOULD BE NICE IF THE HOGS FOUND HER ONE DAY WHILE SHE WAS IN THE WOODS FEEDING THE "CUTE TEDDY BEARS", AS SHE PUTS IT, BUT THIS WOMAN WILL NOT STOP, BELIEVE YOU ME SHE IS ONE OF A KIND...
