I just got back from WVa. about an hour ago and I have never seen the deer that I did this weekend. This will sound like a bunch of crapola but it is all true.
Friday evening- Unpacked my gear from the truck and grabbed a bit to eat. Getting to late to go up on top the mountain so I jump on the 4 wheeler and head up the lane as far as I could before it got dark. On the way up the road I seen 1 six point and a couple doe. The 6 was decent but nothing that I have not seen before.
Saturday Morning- Head out through the woods to check out a couple of fields and some of the stands we hunt. Seen a few does. Headed back up the lane that winds up through the mountain to a large plateau on the top. The plateau is actually a farm with huge fields surrounded by woods. When we get to the top we see half dozen does and one WIDE 4 point, probably 17 or 18 inches. Headed back to the cabin to work for the rest of the morning and afternoon.
Saturday evening- Left the cabin and headed to the top when we get to the top we see 8 doe and the wide 4 point we had seen that morning. This was in the first clearing we came to. We rode about another 800 yds to the cemetery that sits on top the mountain. We see deer and I stop, the deer had just came out of the woods and were crossing in front of the cemetery. The count was this, 5 bucks all racks in one group. 2- 10s , 2- 8s and a 6. The 6 had real long main beams and decent tines but he was a little out of proportion side to side. The 10s on the other hand were perfect as far as being symmetrical and both were at least 22+ inside...unbelievable. The 8s were also good bucks with long beams and tines and wide. We continued down the road about 200yds maybe and seen 5 other bucks, one was an average 6 and the others were spikes up to 4 or 5 points and all on the small side. On out the road we seen 2 other small bucks in someones yard but they to were small bucks.
Sunday morning- Left the cabin at around 7:00 am and headed up the lane again. On the way up to the top we saw 3 or does and maybe half dozen turkey. When we got to the top we saw 1 buck maybe a 6 couldn't really tell and another about 400 yds out that was a buck but couldn't really tell how big. On they way back down the mountain I saw 2 bucks standing in the road where I had seen the smaller 6 the the first night I was there. As I got closer to them I counted again five bucks. Not the 5 big boys I had seen Saturday evening but five different bucks. These were all respectable bucks in their own rights, I mean bigger than most that I have ever had the opportunity to shoot.
So all in all I probably seen more bucks than does this weekend which, to me, is not the norm, at least it hasn't been in the past 6 or 7 years that I have hunted there. Now the property that I hunt is private and all of the bucks that I seen were on the adjoining property. The adjoining property is also private and I don't have permission to hunt it. The hunt club that has the property has a 8 points or better rule which may be the reason for the great bucks that are there. I only archery hunt on the property that we use and maybe, just maybe one of those big boys might wonder down the mountain to our property and give me the opportunity to harvest the buck that I have been after for 33 years.
I wish that I would have taken my video camera or even the digital along with me so that you all could have enjoyed the bucks like I did. I just ran out of time Friday when getting my stuff together after work to make the 3:00 departure, SORRY. BUT WAIT all is not lost, I am going back down September 30th and this time I WILL HAVE THE VIDEO CAMERA and hopefully no one pops them or stirs them up before then.![]()
