Another successful journey on our annual trip out west. This completed my ninth year and as usual the people, landscape and birds leave a lasting impression... I think I look forward to visiting more every year.
The small cabin we rent overlooking a federal refuge...nothing fancy but serves as a fine base camp...no phone, no TV
Prior to our arrival they had two solid weeks of below normal temps with several days of rain/snow which delayed harvest of most crops in the area which resulted in some addtional window time scouting. Past experience in the area helped greatly and resulted in quality hunts.
The last morning of our trip we awoke to the sound of a steady rain. From the evening before scouting trip we had found a steady flow of mallards hitting a cut cornfield. Due to the rain a drive into the field was out as we didnt want to jeopardize rutting up the field or sevvering the relationship with the farmer. The walk in carrying all the gear was gonna be a hike along with ten pounds of mud on the bottom of our boots. After setting up and a short wait.......... the mallards starting coming in waves and rewarded us for our efforts which resulted in full limits for all.
A fine way to end the trip and another great memory burnt in the back of my mind to carry me thru the year until our next return.
HUNTING THE DAKOTA'S IS A SPECIAL TREAT FOR SURE, I DIDN'T MAKE IT OUT THERE THIS YEAR AND I REALLY REGRET IT. IT SEEMS YOU HAD A GREAT TIME AND A GREAT HUNT.
Dead hens don't lay eggs Mike. Like the matching shirts. All kiddin aside great trip guys. Urtz says he was on the birds, not sure what he was implying!!!
