Maybe I can go with a duck baiting technique. Does anyone have an old box spring? You think the homeowner will wonder why there is a bed in the backyard?
After a break that seems like an eternity, I'm back in the woods. Well sorta, I'm sitting at the base of a tree in the yard and wearing my topsiders.
Still in full camo, and hoping the deer haven't changed there pattern much in over a week.
It's'80ish degrees and cooling fast. I have męself set up for one shot and one shot only. My back is to a fence and a pile of firewood and the low spot in the fence is 30 yds up the hill to my left. The wind is minimal, but the cool thermals seem to be working to my advantage. Already saw 2 deer in the yard upon arrival.
Grasshopper reported 8 deer @ 50 yds at his place 10 miles across the county.
The herd never showed and it got to dark by the time I snuck to 40 yds from the 4 that were feeding on persimmons on the property line. I couldn't have technically taken the shot anyway b/c of the location, but it was fun to stalk in on them.
I did the elephant walk, and was able to close the distance from 90 to 40 yds. The whole time one of the does was alert and staring at me. They didn't spook until I stood up and drew to try and take a shot. It was too dark, and the only target was the smallest fawn I've ever seen in Oct.
Tonight was one of my better hunts this year. I was on the ground in their world and was able to fool them. That's a plus in my book.

The Grasshopper missed a shot tonight as he struggled to see his pins. He said he could see what he was shooting at, but was a little uneasy and probably flinched. It was a 25ish yd shot. He's now 1 for 3 on the season.
Grasshopper and I are at it again. We're in the same place as his kill and have had 5 in the area so far. I let a doe cross the creek and drew when she was 35 yds w/ her head behind a tree. Of course she looked right at me when she came around the other side. She was 28 yds broadside and I let one loose. The lumenock disappeared as it got to her. We cab't see the arrow, so who knows.
A gravy dripper and her button brother then passed behind me @ 15 yds and I shot her.
There's'a little light colored hair on the ground and a blood trail I can see w/ binocs from the tree. I watched her go 60 yds and don't think she's'heavy enough to make a crashing noise.
The miss on the first deer has me confused. We'll see in a little when I climb down.
Both shots were low. One arrow had cartilage and the other cut hair and had blood for 75 yds.
Both trails were followed as far as they went, and we jumped the small deer. She ran off and I could see a slice. It didn't seem to penetrate the body cavity, so there's hope she will survive.
The other had penetration noted by the bubbles in the blood. We never ran into her, and followed for 200 yds before it ran out.
With as low as both were, I can only hope I did nothing but cut them and ruin their day.
I just went out and shot and it seems I'm shooting a little low. I think it's time to do some serious tuning and sight things in to pre season standards.
I hate to lose a deer, let alone two, but I do think they'll make it. If not I do know that nothing is wasted in nature.
Speaking of nature. There were two raccoons out this morning around 8 o'clock. One scared the crap out of me and I jumped 5 feet. What a puss.
Not a great way to start hump day, that's for sure.
Grasshopper has gone to 1 and 4. I told him that the lead fawn was a button. After I hit the doe, he shoots at the damn button. Then tells me he thought I meant I saw a buck somewhere else.
Then when tracking he asks if there's a chance the blood is from another hunter's deer. The same blood we've been following from the location of the shot.
