    .30-06 Best all Around Cartridge?

Its time to add another rifle to the safe:

It goes without saying that no single cartridge can do everything the best, but for a single cartridge that is good for most North American big game what would ya'll say is a good all around cartridge. As I recall, the 30-06 for years was this cartridge in that it has reasonably good medium range balistics, plenty of energy, yet is not a cannon. As far as all around, I would say the definition is: works well for Eastern Whitetail to Elk, to Black Bears. Effective deer range to 300 yds.
Is there another round that perhaps is a better, general purpose--- one size fits all?

best all around, the '06 would be very tuff to beat. Wide range of bullets, easy to find ammo, enough ump for all NA game. getcha one.

I went 30-06 for several reasons. Choices of round are endless. I can go 150 for real long (to 400). 165 nosler will blam the biggest of critters. I can even dummy it down to 180 round nose for brush. The most enjoyable aspect of the '06 is that most any place I go I can pick some up.

Not for Elk............ 30.06 is a little behind the new modern cartridges

7mm.08 is flatter for most animals but still is light for elk.... I killed the biggest elk I have taken with one......... bullets all hung under the skin on far side

Short mags are todays best............ short bolt travel like your small calibers but will take down any North American mammal....... and flat shooting son of a b's

7mm WSM is my choice but there are several...... 300 WSM..... 270 WSM, ect................Ultra Short Mags too

    You want be disappointed !!!!!!

Just a Westerners opinion....... have seen 3 Buffalo, 2 Rocky Mtn. Big Horns and numerous Elk taken with them.......... Oh yea, Mule Deer and I shoot whitetail with mine so they ain't to big for them

    My choice

I personally have a Weatherly 257 mag for most applications, and also have a Weatherly 300 mag barrel for the same gun. I shoot a Blaser and love it.

Overall, I've had great performance with my Weatherby .270 bolt

I've decided to try a 7mm next deer season, just for more range.

From what I've gathered from many deer hunters, you really cannot beat a .30-06 for an all-around gun.
