Got the call yesterday morning that my nephew Hesston was coming home Friday evening for the Holidays and he wanted to go Hawg Hunting. He was in luck.......I knew where some were feeding since the river had come up from all the rain last week. Put him in a stand and teased him a bit making sure to tell him to be careful cause these hogs had been known to eat hunters from time to time. He stared at me like are you serious? I said yes.....so make sure you dont miss. He said can they climb tree stands? I said I have never seen one climb a tree stand but you never know. Just dont miss HESSTON! He says when will you back, I said after dark. He just looked at me like after DAAAARK. Hesston.........you got a phone, call me if you need me! OK.......Uncle ACEY, UUUUH........OK.....I'll see you after dark, you wont be toooo late will you? Probably not but you be ready OK.
Well..... about Dark Thirty, I hear a shot. And immediately the phone rings. Its Hesston.........I think I got one, its dark.....are you close by? I said is it dead Hesston? He says I'm not sure but I hear others all around me. I said be careful and dont let one of them get you boy. Uncle ACEY......how long will it be? Not sure.........just sit tight and I'll be there in a few minutes.
Now it didnt take me 5 minutes to get there but in that short period of time he must have called 7 times. Are you almost here? Almost there Hesston.
As I approached the stand he says, be careful I hear them all around us, and sure enough I shine the trees and there were eyes staring from the shadows. I said come on down....he refused and said I think Ill stay here. I said all night! he said OK..........but keep the light on OK? Down he came and we went to look for the hog. There she lay in the water. He said WOW! I said OK.....pull him out. UUH.... to the road? I said yeah.......thats part of hunting boy, now drag your hog out. Well needless to say, it was bigger than him so I ended up helping him to the truck.
After some lessons in gutting and skinning, we painted his face and iced her down for the grill. Little did he know he would be eating her on Sunday. Now hes ruint.........he wants to go again this evening!
