    The 12 minute hunt!

With no children activities on schedule for yesterday afternoon I saw a rare oppertunity for a weekday afternoon hunt. Not being able to leave work until 4:00 and a 20 minute drive combined with a 5 minute walk to the stand I wouldn't have much more than an hour to hunt but that was way more time than I needed as it turned out. As I walked quickly to the stand I was trying to be quiet but it seemed I stepped on every small branch on the trail. I climbed up in the 16' ladder stand and sat down. I glanced at my watch and it was 4:30 on the nose. I took a deep breath and settled in. Hunting a transition line with a cutover to my back and open woods in front of me, I here a twig snap over my left shoulder. I turn to see this guy coming out of the thicket. I'm convinced by the way he was acting that he heard me walking through the woods and was coming to investigate. He was alert and looking around. With the wind to my back he couldn't smell me but, with the direction he was headed in he would soon cross where I had walked in. He did, and he stopped long enough to give me great broadside shot at less than 30 yds. I don't remember the last buck I shot, the does are plentiful so I usually let the bucks walk. I should have let this one pass too I guess but it all happened so fast I got caught up in the moment. Dropped him in his tracks and looked at my watch again. 4:42. My quickest hunt for sure.

    Wink

You can see in the second photo he is scratched up on his hip. I don't know if he had been fighting or what but his neck was still swollen and his tarsals were wet and rank!
