Team BeagleMan was Fishing out of Bell Hall Landing on the Congaree River 7-16-08. Team BeagleMan constided of Beagleman, BeagleWoman and JoJo. This trip turned out a little differently than we had expected. Fishing was slow, finding only three or four fish to the hole. We had to move around alot. The river now is very shallow, and the deeper water harder to locate. The fish we did catch had good size. Totals for the day were as follows:
73 bream and shellcrackers
7 catfish
1 Large mouth bass (caught on fly rod, exciting)
1 mudfish
And
1 swine (yes, swine, we caught a pig!)
It was late in the afternoon when we heard some dogs yapping. Didn't think much of it. There was a cabin down river and figured they had some dogs there. Well, we decided to leave about twenty minutes later and when we got around a couple of bends we saw three dogs in the water swimming. With the banks so steep in this section of fiver we wanted to check on their safety. as we got closer the dogs headed for the bank and went straight up the steep bank. I noticed something floating in the water. Worried that it was on of the dogs we wanted to see. As we got closer I knew it was a pig. It seems the dogs caught it and drowned it. Piggy was still warm (had ticks still on it). I rolled her into the boat, and to the landing we went. What a mix bag catch we got today. Surely we will have something for everyone tonight! Dogs were either wild dogs or coyotes. Two were short hair and one long haired with no collars on any. Next time we fish there I will be on the look out for them.
Also this trip we had an encounter with a polecat(skunk) not so nice, and we got to watch a bale eagle hunt for food, this was nice.
Actually this is the second time we have landed a pig while bream fishing. First time was a few years ago. Same river, different location and time of the year. We were bream fishing and listening to the Carolina and Clemson game. Hogs came up on some game managment land and I went and killed one. About the same size as this one. I got the one from thursday on the grill now. Almost ready to eat.....
The pig turned out great. Fish were good too. We had all the trimmings to go with them also. Good food & Great friends, doesn't get any better....
