Young angler scores big with Christmas rod-and-reel

You can't make up stuff like this:

    • Seven-year-old gets a new rod-and-reel for Christmas.
    • Dad takes him fishing a couple of days later.
    • Youngster hooks and lands a monster bass bigger than anything most veteran anglers will see in their fishing careers.

It happened yesterday (Thursday) on Lake Fork. According to staff at the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens, young Parker Chambers pulled it off.

Chambers and his father, Chris, were fishing Fork. Parker was using a rod-and-reel he received as a Christmas present. He was chunking a crankbait - a Rapala X-Rap - in about 6 feet of water when a big bass bit.

Parker Chambers, left, landed the 13.4-pound Lake Fork largemouth bass his father Chris, right, holds. Parker, 7, donated the live bass to the state's ShareLunker program, making him the youngest angler to donate a 13-plus-pound bass in the program's 20-year history.

Parker and his dad landed the fish, a 13.4-pound largemouth that measured 24.75 inches long with a 20.5-inch girth.

The Parkers kept the big female bass alive and donated it to the state's ShareLunker program.

The fish is the 425th 13-plus-pound largemouth donated to ShareLunker. And Parker now stands as the youngest angler to have donated a monster bass to the state's highly-successful hatchery production and fisheries research program.
