We left the dock at 4:30 a.m. to get an early start. We were fishing with Capt. Dom as usuall for his great ability to find us some big sharks. We got out to our first spot in about one hour and we started our slick. About 1 hour passed and we were about to leave the spot when a blue shark appeared from under the boat. He wasnt huge about 120 pounder and i thought that he would put up a decent fight but after one short run i had him to the boat in about 10 minutes and he was wrapped up real good in the leader. It took about 10 more minutes to get him unwrapped my dad stuck a small gaff in his upper jaw to control him but he just kept on rolling, those blue sharks are SO flexible its not even funny. After we got rid of that small blue shark we moved 8 miles south of where we were and this WAS THE SPOT. My dad had a tip rod which was my dad and I's accurate 50 w. and he would let about 200 yards of line out and then reel it back in like it was a wounded fish. Short fast pumps then stop. And the third time he let the line out at this spot.......BAM! he was hit. At first we thought it was a really big blue shark which would easily beat the 431 pound blue we caught last year. For about 15 minutes we were struggling with the harness and clearing the deck. Then the fight changed. It went from a usuall blue shark straight up and down fight to a straight out the back of the boat deep fight and we started to second guess this "blue shark". My dad actually made short work at getting this beast to the boat and about 10 minutes after getting everything under control..... All i can see is a MASSIVE Bronze/ Brown shape coming up to the surface slowly and the only thing that came to me my dad's and Capt. Dom's minds were THRESHER! As soon as it appeared it was gone but this time under the boat. He was slowly making his way up to the front of the boat and suddenly made a 360 and must have hit the line with his tail and POP. He was gone. After we discussed what went wrong we were thinking.... THAT FISH WAS MASSIVE. One of the biggest Sharks Capt. Dom has ever seen in his whole life. Later on in the car my dad got a call from Dom and you know what he said. After looking at tables and charts for about 2 hours he guestimated the fish to be 500 - 600 pounds. I know most of you wont belive this but the fish was absolutely humongous. It was easly 200 pounds bigger than the Rhode Island State Record blue shark we caught last year. Oh well better to get the lost fish out of our system before Oaks Bluff next week! I only have some pics of my dad fighting the fish because we only had a 3 man crue and my dad was on the rod Capt. Dom was trying to get away from the fish so i had to try my best to clear the deck so my dad could fight the fish comfortably and when the fish came to the boat i couldnt be sitting around with a camera i had to try my best to help Capt. Dom who was doing everything in his power to stop us from losing this fish. I'm still in shock of how big this fish was it was truely a monster.
