Unhappy My Brother Claims He Hates Fishing! HELP ME!

I have two brothers. Sydney, the youngest, who most of you know, is 7 years old and is loving the fishing experience. I'm the oldest, and it's pretty obvious, I love fishing as well. And then there's Matthew. He's 10 years old and we were just chatting, when he said the three words that should never be said in the same sentence. "I HATE FISHING!" he claims!

Below I have posted a few pictures of Matthew and a few of his catches:

In the first picture, Matthew and I are pictured with a few hours worth of nice tog from last year. And he says that fishing is boring because, "All you do is sit around and wait for a fish!" From this picture, I beg to differ!

Picture number 2 - This is a fish that I know I won't forget! Matthew came with us on a charter with Captain Timmy. I was fishing spinning rods, he was fishing deck rods. A deck rod goes off. Matthew picks it up, and with a little help from Timmy, the fish is at the side of the boat in no time. The fish came swimming up to the side of the boat, and Timmy said to my dad, "Get the bigger net!" Matthew had just caught a 45 lb. striper! He had and still has no idea what he caught that day! I've tried to explain to him that few people ever see a fish of that size, and that I'm jealous to this day, but can you blame me? The highlight of his day was smacking flies with a waterbottle and picking the little shrimp out of the seaweed!

So help me out here! We can't get him into it! I've gotten a few of my friends into fishing and they were total girly girls, but this is way harder! He's family and this really means something to me! HELP!

Ann- as you get older, you will find that everyone is thier own person and you can't make someone like something. It's what makes everyone different and everyone has thier own likes and dislikes. As far as the boring part, it might be that he has to grow a little older and learn patience.
You might even find that since you, your dad and Sydney are catching fish, that he might even get a little jealous and will want to start going along to share in the fishing adventures.

Give him some time and just show him how much fun that you have while fishing and maybe he will change his mind.

Next time he says that... Smack him with the back side of a flying gaff. Not hard enough to draw blood but enough to get his attention. When his blurry vision clears **** the gaff back again and say "Excuse me? I thought I heard you say..."

Only kidding... Some people just don't love our sport like we do. Thats what makes the world go around. You can remind him of the good times and let him know how sad its going to be fishing without him and all the fun you and the rest of your family are gonna have while he just sits home alone and does whatever...

Thanks guys. I don't know if he'll ever really get into it, but thanks for the advice!

Deep, That gaff idea isn't a bad one!

quite frankly you should disown him as a brother . Just kidding of course. I found that the best way to keep someone interested is to point out all the cool things you see while fishing in the ocean. this week Nico and I went out to the washington cayon. We caught a few but here is what we saw. at lease 1000 two-tone porpoises, 1 whale, 1 hammmerhead shark, 2 turtles and a manta ray. Now you may not see that much life all the time but it sure is neat to see that stuff. I also let him drive for about an hour. actually raised a white marlin while he was driving. and the way kids are addiction to anything computer wise, he had a blast while I was teaching him the gps unit and tracking our path.

You are a special kid because you like fishing. most kids your age like catching and get bored really quick when actually fishing. pointing out the cool things in the ocean will usually keep them interested inbetween bites.
