Hide- My Wifes Logged On
get your rides
i started WORKING on a headboat and have worked my up to a backup mate then 2nd mate and now 1st mate, by of course people talking about me, and fishing whenever i get the chance to fish with new people, i will fish where my boat is, then be over in maryland the next week, and then later be in jersey!i think its all about people getting to know who you are, and how much you know and like about fishing another thing is of how i fish, i use all the knowledge i know from different people and combine it to my own way. which is another thing BE OPEN TO LEARN ANYTHING! EVEN IF IT IS TWEEKING SOMETHING YOU ALREADY KNOW! at my docks, almost everyone knows that i know whats up, and i have been asked by a couple of captains if i could work for them this coming season, and i am trying to make my decision on where to fish and who to fish with.

Sit down Shut up And fish
Read this young guys!!!!
I got my job by just letting people know that fishing is what I love to do. Last January I went looking for a job in OCMD, on a charter boat with a decent amount of offshore fish expeirence. I met my present captian at the boat show in OC. I didn't think I was goin to get the Job. I freelanced on a few boats and worked at a tackle shop for a month, be for word word got around. Next thing I knew I was getting my dream Job try out. I ended up being good enough and started my first real sportfishing Job on a Brand new 2007 56 Viking that fished 3 or 4 days a week and every major tournament. Its all about talkin the talk and walkin the walk. If you have some expierence and talk your self up a bit you will get an Offer or a Tryout. Its up to you weather you walk the walk, and live up to what you say you can do. I was lucky and had a captian that noticed that I really loved fishing.
The first day I fished with him I was at the boat 20 minutes before he was, and Ive been there and will continue to be there 15 to 30 minute early every morning, gettting things ready for the day.
As a young Inexpierenced mate you have to be willing to work hard and willing to learn as much as possible. And every day we dont fish i show up to the boat at 9 am and start waxing, doing miantantence that I know how to do, cleaning or working on re rigging for the next trip. Until he says i can take a day off.
Be friend as many people as you can around the docks, you will learn sooooooooo much by just being around the marina every day. And when somebody helps you out, make sure you repay the favor.
Word gets around real quick around the docks, weather its good or bad people will talk and other people will listen. I'm up at college right now and I'm 19 I go out alot, but when I get down to the boat I am a totally differnt person after I got my Job last summer I went out twice in two and a half months and that was after I knew we wernt fishing for more for a few days.
as a young mate you have to remember that as fun as it might be it is a JOB, and you do get piad alot more then your friends to do what you LOVE to do.
All I really Have to say is talk the talk and when it is time to walk the walk make sure you live up to it.
Just remember that when your out 50 some miles out in the poor mans somewhere on a 2 million dollar boat, with a 200 pound blue marlin at the other end of the leader, that your friends are on land getting piad alot less to bust tables or work on a farm or something like that.

Anthony's Ark is a blowboater
The key is showing interest showing that you are willing to learn and help others with patients. Doing what ever it takes to land that big fish in the boat, being able to make the customers happy.

Hi, i love to fish, and now that im almost 16 have been looking into jobs. a mating job on a fishing boat would be my dream job at this age. i was wondering how do i go around getting a job like this. i know "walk the walk, and talk the talk" but my saltwater knowledge is mostly inshore. i love to learn new techniques and such, what fisherman doesnt? but im about an hours drive from the nearest beach. should i just go to a marina and ask for a job or what?

Crab mustard is good
Although I'm not a mate on a boat, I think the best way to find a mating job would be to just get involved at your local marinas. Get connected with the local salts and make new friends because if you get your name out there soon enough you may find that someone mentioned your name or recommended you to a friend. Just keep your eyes open and good luck!
