The course consisted of 6 chapters and each chapter was about an hour long with a 5-10 minute break in between. You take the test the same day and they grade it right in front of you. If you pass (they've never had anyone fail), you receive your temporary certificate and then I think they send you a permanent one in the mail. I passed with a 97 (2 questions wrong out of 60). The course covered all basic precautions/requirements for the U.S. and the state of New Jersey. The last 10 questions cover New Jersey laws, the rest are national or international. For just $50 dollars, you get the course, the test, hopefully your certificate, lunch, and you never have to take the test again (until the rules change; they always do!)
I would recommend this course to anyone, even if they don't own their own water vessel. The course covers you for all boating requirements, from sportfishing boats to personal water crafts. It was well worth it and it can't hurt to be certified!
