Fluke and Cod fishing In Rhode Island

My dad and I went up to Rhode Island and Fished the Frances Fleet for the last day of fluke fishing and opening day of cod fishing(Sunday and Monday). On Sunday we started fishing relatively close to the point. My dad got the 1st keeper fluke between us. He soon got another one then I got one soon after. I also got a small jonah crab on a white spro. Jay a regular who was fishing next to us could only manage some shorts. Later Capt. Rich ran further to the east and my dad instantly hooked up to a double header of 16inch seabass and Jay got a seabass too. Then the bite seemed to shut down all together at this spot so Rich ran back to where we started and we picked some fish and I got another keeper fluke. I dropped down again and hooked up to what turned out to be a double header of sea robins, this is the second week in a row that I've done that.My dad got another keeper.for the day. Jay hooked up and brought in a 4-4.5 pound fluke that he tried to throw back but it got snagged on the lower spro on his rig and Jay made the comment maybe I should keep the fish and threw it back. Turns out that decision would come to haunt him since the pool was only a 3 pound fluke. Pete brought some fresh teriyaki yellow fin from his trip last week, Man was that good. Monday was the first day sailing for cod. We left dock with 45 people. We got to the fishing grounds, anchored up and Connie, Pete's wife was the first to score with a 24inch cod. Then I started bringing in a fish and it got very heavy for a couple seconds then I get it to the surface to find just a cod head on my hook. It would have been a short fish anyway but it got chopped in half by a large bluefish. It reminded me of being in the GOM with the blue sharks. My dad hooked up and brought in a nice cod that was 15pounds.Connie also got what would have been a keeper fluke if the season was still open. Connie and Pete were catching a few shorts. The dogs weren't too bad if you knew how to rig accordingly. My dad Connie Pete and I only got 2 dogs each while some had many more. We moved to a few spots and we would have some pretty good fishing till the dogs invaded and stopped the cod from biting. We moved to one spot that I hooked into a decent fish and got a good ways off the bottom and got snagged on something and lost the fish. On the way to a new spot my dad decided to shuck one of the clams and put a whole one on his hook and people were making fun of him saying what are you trying to choke them and as soon as he gets to bottom, BAM he was hooked up to a nice cod. this one was in the 8-10pound range. I asked my dad to shuck one for me this time so I bait up and get to the bottom. A couple minutes later I was on. This fish pulled a good amount of drag and my dad made the comment Oh S**t that better not be a bluefish because of the runs it was taking. I would gain some line then lose some gain some lose some this went on the whole way up. Into the boat comes a nice 19pound cod, My second largest cod to date. It was my only cod of the day. I quick baited up another whole clam and as soon as I got to the bottom I hooked up again to another cod but dropped it soon after. My dad ended up with 2 nice cod Connie and Pete each got one and I got one. One guy on the opposite side of the boat from us had 8 shorts while a guy about 10 people up from me had 5 keepers including one that was about 20pounds. My fish was 3rd heaviest on the boat. Someone in the bow got one that was about 22pounds. Most of the fish were either just legal or very nice fish. The only complaint I have is with the weather because it was to windy to drift the pieces which I believe we would have had a more productive day on the cod and less dogfish action. Capt. Frank did a great job with the conditions and put a good number of nice cod in the boat despite the uncooperative weather. I hope to get back up there again soon.

Good job CKONKL. I had a feeling you would get them this time. That is a nice cod. Thanks for the report and pics. Keep it up. By the way, how the heck did you get out of school on Monday. Your dad must be pretty cool.

Well The first rule is my grades have to be good then I have to go to school the next day no matter how late we get back in, all my home work has to be done and I can get a little lee way since its my senior year.

My fishing criteria is the same. No grades, NO FISHING! It's my last year in the middle school, so all the teachers are a little easier to talk to, but GEPA (ASK 8) Prep and Geometry are really hard to get out of! But as long as I get my work done and bring the teachers fish, everyone is happy!

Anngler the GEPA is not hard at all. just do the work and you will just do fine. those fish are nice.
