First Tuna Trip of the Year

On July 9th, my dad, Sydney, our cousin Rich, and myself headed out to try for some tuna. We left the house at around 5 o'clock, greeted by a nice, warm, morning air. Our schedule was to be at the marina by 5:30, to meet Rich, and then be shoving off by 6:30. Well, we had some extra odds and ends to take care of, so we didn't leave until around 7 o'clock. It was a head-wind on the way out, but we made good timing and were fishing by 8:30. Within the first 20 minutes, we had our first hook-up. Cousin Rich fought a nice 45 incher, which we put in the box. While he was fighting that fish, I spotted a mahi in the slick and tossed a piece of butterfish to it. It took the bait and I had it in the boat in no time. Almost all our fish were caught on jigs, but lots of varieties. We had decent action all day, and usually marked a few fish. Most of the fish were clones, ranging anywhere from 45-48 inches. Our largest fish of the day, at 48 inches, and caught by Rich, was caught right as we were calling it a day.

We saw a little life while we were out there. A sea turtle played with one of our balloons and a dusky took one of our baits.

Nice job. I might be going down to Virginia soon for some tuna myself after my cod trip next week.

were you guys at the cigar or down around the southern lumps? we were out saturday and got a 45incher behind a scallop boat up north. good job on the fish!
