Thumbs up A Day of Firsts!

    What a day!

We were up by 2:30 and were leaving the dock by 4. The crew consisted of my dad, Sydney, Dan (tuna123), my dad's friend Ronny, and myself. Dan and Ronny slept over, so we didn't have to worry about people being late or getting picked up. There was a little fog on the way out, but all the navigation gear worked perfectly, and we made it out in 2 hours. We started trolling right away; Dan and I taking turns driving, and Ronny and my dad putting out the spread. After trolling around for a little while, we found a line of pots, so we started working them. We hadn't had any action all morning, and then I heard it. BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!! We had a fish, a big fish, but what rod!!?? Not on any of the riggers, wait the top rod! My dad grabbed the rod and set the hook! BIG FISH! he handed the rod to Dan, but he said no way, that was my dad's fish. "Start clearing the rods!" my dad said. All hands on deck and every line was in in less than 5 minutes. Ronny's on the wheel, I'm helping out my dad. Sydney's taking pictures, and Dan's getting the gaff ready (which was our tiny gaff, the only one we had). My dad started the fight with the hookie, but by the end he was using the belt. He had it to the point where we could see color, but each time the fish took another run. My dad had at least 30 pounds of pressure on the fish, but that fish just didn't want to come up. Finally, the fish was beat, and so was my dad. It was way bigger than any of us thought. We stuck it, and surprisingly, the fish didn't budge. Over the side and into the boat. We bled it, gutted it, and barely got it into the bag. We landed the first bigeye on the ModSquad! That was the perfect way to start the day! We iced him down nicely, then we got the spread back out. Not to long after we finished getting the spread out again, we hooked into a nice longfin. Dan fought it to the boat in no time. First longfin We continued trolling and soon after we had a knock down, but saw no fish. Then my dad yelled, "Bill!" I grabbed the pitch bait and dropped it back, but no bite. I guess Mr. Whitey wasn't very hungry. It was the first white the ModSquad had raised. We trolled around for a while, but with no other luck, we decided to go drop for tile. Off to the special numbers. With only a few rods with power pro, Ronny got stuck using a spinning rod! Every drop we had decent action and every got a tile by the time we were done. First blue line and golden tiles on the ModSquad No of us could wait to weigh the fish! Up to the scales when we got to the marina. The bigeye weighed in at 188.5 lbs. and the longfin weighed in at 51 lbs. All in all we had an awesome day, and lots of fun!

    Thanks guys!

Unfortunately, we won't be attending Old Saybrook! My dad's friend is turning 50 and my dad can't miss the party! So, I'm working on him, but I'm pretty sure we won't be there!
