Cod Jigging

I'm dying to get out and do some cod jigging so after hearing how a friend of mine did on the Helen H last Monday I decided to book for this Thursday. As of now we only have 7 people hopefully we can get some more. There also have been some big Porbegal Sharks around maybe I'll get lucky enough to hook into one. They got one last week that was estimated at 600lbs. Can't wait to get out there

I was gonna try for the porbeagle junior record a few years back, but by the time we got out, the sharks weren't there.

Right now Georges Bank is loaded with them. When my buddy was out Monday he had one on but it spit the hook. There all over wreaking havoc on hooked cod.

Helen H 1/17

My friend Eben and I went on the Helen H 1/17. I finally got to go cod jigging. This trip on the Helen H was my first trip to start off the 08 fishing season and it was a good way to start off the season on a high note. Surprisingly enough Eben and I were the first people on the boat and I positioned us in the port stern. We got to the fishing area before 7 and I decided to use my Calstar 800m and Saltiga 15 paired up with a 12oz lav and a blue fly. I hooked up instantly and got a nice keeper into the boat. then Eben followed. My next cast was less successful. I got tangled up with someone hooked into a Porbegal and had my jig cut so I had to re rig up that jig and I really didn't miss too much since Joe called lines up soon after I got messed up. So back in action after the 2nd drift we had over 16cod in our cooler. It was good picking then I decided to take a little break and as I did the action slowed down. This gave Eben a chance to try out my setup and as soon as his jig hit the bottom he got a keeper. So after I finished my break a couple drifts later the fish decided it was lunch time and the bent rods started. Eben and I were getting a fish a cast on these drifts then sadly the good day of cod jigging had to come to an end. Eben and I teamed up for 60 something keeper cod. We probably had 30keepers each not counting the ones that we threw back that were just legal or too skinny for our likings.

Only found time to take pics once in the morning
My 2 biggest
my biggest
Eben's 2 biggest

Helen H 1/26

My dad, Eben, Nick Blount and myself went up to fish the Helen H again. We got to the fishing grounds a little after sun up and it was a little different than last time out. There were no other boats around just us and a couple scallop boats. First drop Eben my dad and Nick got keepers I got a short. I started out using the little Saltiga and a 12oz lav. I used this until I got stuck on the rudder after being in a tangle and lost the jig and about 90 feet of line. So I went up to a 16oz lav. I got a keeper as did Nick my dad and Eben. Joe made many moves trying to find a body of fish that wanted to eat but the fish just didn't want to play along. I did one tenth of what I got last trip, ending up with 3 keepers and lost another 3 inches from being into the boat. Nick got 8 keepers. He was using a 14oz knife jig that was purple on one side and glow on the other matched with a single hook blue tube and for a teaser a purple tube. My dad got 2 keepers and Eben got 7 cod and one Pollock. Capt Joe tried his hardest but the fish just didn't want to play. We didn't return back to the dock until ten to 8. Also heard some rumors of a wreck trip possibly this week, I'm looking forward to that one.
