    American Classic 2/17

This was my first time fishing on the American Classic. All I have to say is this was the 1st of many visits to pay Captain Jim Walsh a visit. He is a very good Captain and works hard to put the fares on the fish and keep them on the fish. The fishing was unbelievable. Double headers were a common place. I found great success using a 16oz lav and a dark green fly. My dad got a very nice cod that was 25pounds, Eben got one that was 21 and boy that was a nerve wracking thing. Gaff goes into the fish fish is at the rail gaff rips out fish drops back into the water and sinks from vision. Luckily Eben let his reel into free spool to not lose the fish and it was gaffed again and into the boat upon further notice he had it lassoed around the mouth and wasn't going to get away. Eben also got a double header 18pounds and another close to 10. I didn't get any larger fish my biggest was around 16lbs. I threw back many fish that were keeper size and was only keeping fish bigger than 28inches. The three of us kept 40 fish and could have gotten much more. Can't wait to get back up there again.

    Walsh's 3/14

My dad Eben and I went up to Walsh's yesterday and weren't disappointed. The weather on the way out was beautiful as was the whole day. Our first stop my jig got to the bottom and I instantly hooked up this fish was a short. My dad and Eben hooked up also and got 2 keepers. Reset on the drift and another short for me. We made a quick move and I hooked up to a keeper so did my dad and Eben. Then things slowed up a little and Jimmy made a move and I sent my jig out make two bounces and I was on. The fish started to come off the bottom easily I knew it was a larger keeper then the fish woke up after I got 10 cranks on it making a run toward the bottom pulling drag. Gain that line back and some then making another run toward the bottom. Half way up, I'm doing good, but still have 1/2 way to go and this feels like something good. The fish even gave a few head shakes around this time as well as making another run. Top shot breaks the surface won't be long now until the fish makes it to the surface but something could still go wrong and I could lose the fish. Finally color begins to appear. Henry the mate had been standing by me the whole time. The fish is on the surface now and I can tell it is the biggest cod I have ever gotten. Gaff sunk and the fish is on board. It was in the 30pound range. This broke my 2008 goal of a 25pound cod. I would probably say around 33pounds as the weight I go on the way in after I bled it was 30pounds. So Jimmy says lines up lets do it again. This time Eben hooks up and says it feels good. He thinks he might have a nice double. His fish makes the surface and Dom screams for the gaff for Eben. He couldn't give me more than 5 minutes before smashing my spirit. His fish was 37pounds. It is his biggest cod fish to date. Both Eben and my cod came in on a 16oz lav jig the unplated one. There was another cod caught at the end of the trip that was the same size as Eben's but it looked much bigger as it was shorter and fatter. I ended up the day with 5 keepers and probably threw back another 5 keepers that were just 22inches. My dad his 8 and I think Eben had around 12. It was a great time and a great trip.
