Coastal Charters Sharkin 8/12
Left for Rhode Island about midnight and took about 4 and a half hours to get to the dock my dad had slept for an hour then Dom showed up with the mate. Only ran 26 miles but had a two degree temperature break so we stopped and laid down a quarter mile power slick then set up the baits. It was slow for about an hour then i saw one small 120# class blue shark from up in the tower released him quickly and what happened after that was amazing. We had 6 or 7 blue sharks swimming right in front of the boat and two of them were pretty big. We wanted to bait the big ones so we had to name them hahah one had 3 pilot fish on it so we named it pilot fish, one had about 9 hooks in its mouth so we called it stupid, one was trailing wire so we called it metal mouth, one had a huge cut on its mouth so we called it cut mouth and there was 2 more small ones that we could easily pick out so no need to name them, and then there was THE ONE he was about 320# but couldnt bait him up so we went to work with the other ones and fought one for about a half hour. We finished up on those 5 until there was one last 150# blue shark and my dad wanted to try something different. WAY DIFFERENT. So he got out his stella and threw a popper at a shark and what happens? My dad catches a blue shark on a popper and the best thing about it is that i got it on video and you can see the shark just attack the popper it was CRAZY. We started drifting and a big like box floated by with a school of about 50 trigger fish and we caught 25 then got bored until we saw three mahi come out from under the box which we had tied off to the boat earlier so we could get a whole bunch of fish haha. We caught one of the mahi and out of NO WHERE 3 blue sharks started circling the boat. The funniest part of the trip was when a small 80# blue was going for the bait and a 250# blue was also going for the same bait and the large one bit the small one and held on to its tail for about 10 seconds which i found hilarious hahah. Later on after getting rid of all the blue sharks we actually set out baits and while i was up in the tower i saw a HUGE thresher tail come out of the water about 80 yards away from the boat and then 10 minutes later i saw a huge splash with a bunch of white water everywhere but never got that fish close to the boat. Saw a 18-20 foot basker under the boat then that was it. When there was 6-7 blue sharks swimming around the boat i felt like i was on one of those discovery channel shows when they have sharks everywhere it was insane and my dad almost caught another blue shark on a butterfly jig hahah great day A LOT of sharks.

Anthony...here are some of the pictures from the trip. Although they were only blue sharks releasing close to 16 of them all in one day is tiring to say the least. Great job
It really felt like discovery channel, we had at one time 8 different sharks trying to eat, most of which we named becuase of marks. They were very aggressive actually biting each other and creating a pecking order to feed. The trigger fish were cool as well and probably the easiest fish to catch in my whole life. Let me set the stage, its Sunday afternoon and we are 25 miles offshore shark fishing. My son Anthony and I are fishing with Dom at Coastal charters and they are sharks everywhere, I mean like 40 plus all day, big 200-300lb blue sharks.
Anthony has already released 14-200 lb sharks and I want to have alittle fun so I grab my jigging setup which is a stella 20K on a Smith 52ex and I tie on a popper directly to my mono top shot. I saw a dark shadow about 50ft off the stern and cast to the right of it ...pop, pop and the fin cuts water to the left ...pop, pop and now she see's it. She follows it and pounces on it in 2 seconds and we are tight ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ but it stops for a second and I think "the mono broke" but then I'm tight again ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. DOM was in disbelief 15 minutes later my luck is still entact, the slip I felt was teh popper, it must have slipped out of his mouth and got caught on his pec in so I end up successfully catching and releasing a 100+ lb blue shark with a Popper on MONO Now thats what i call fun, I have the whole thing on video and its awesome watching him chase it. I only have enough time to post the story and pictures for now but hopefully the video will be up tomorrow Glenn Last edited by gman; 08-13-2007 at 10:03 PM. |

I was away at camp from the 12th to the 17th, and I really missed reading the reports from all of you! Congrats on an awesome day and it sounds like you had a lot of fun. Can't wait to see the vid!
