Ahhhh to be back on the roll of Fishing in Quepos Costa Rica in the High Season. Although we had some nice fishing through the green season months of the summer, what we all anticipate is here. November and some nice fishing. Henry Cannon fished one day after heavy rains washing alot of debris out of the rivers and had some dorado, but as the skies cleared he was rewarded on second day with a Marlin, 3 Sailfish and 3 Dorado. Client Joe Reid fished with us the following day and had a 350 lb. Blue marlin, 2 Sailfish, 2 Big Dorado and 8 40 lb. Yellow Fin Tuna. These nice reports from our clients at www.queposfishing.com keep us anticipating the upcoming weeks and season

Kayak fishing (or “Yak” to aficionados) has been around for some time now, developing into a primarily coastal sport since the mid 1980’s. It offers solitude and proximity to the fishing – but primarily stealth and the ability to fish in extremely skinny water.
Some adventurous souls however continue to push the envelope – we have even experienced anglers in Guatemala launching their Yak from a mother ship 40 miles out to chase sailfish. One of the first and best known pioneers of “extreme kayaking” is Florida resident Kayak Willie who became a legend, catching sailfish in the Florida Keys at will from his fifty-pound kayak. Using live ballyhoo as bait, he hooked sailfish in as little as forty-five feet of water. One towed him twelve miles before breaking off. Sharks were an occasional hazard, as were skittering sailfish that nearly speared him while he floated inches above the waterline. Even catching bait could be dangerous. Leaning over to unhook a blue runner, Willie was about to grab his bait when a barracuda lunged and cut the fish in half. Asked what his highest priority tip was for this kind of fishing – he replied “Velcro”…………a wonderful invention that enables the kayak fisherman to physically attach gear to the hull. Of course some might argue that this should always take second place to paddle clips; you can always chase the bait bucket that may have fallen over, but try chasing your paddle in a 2 know current using the palms of your hand !
No kayak fishing to report in Guatemala this past week, but we did experience a brief burst of extreme fishing. Once the front had moved through (the effects of IDA), the blue water settled down and the fish were biting aggressively. For a couple of days building up to the new moon we were raising over 40 sailfish per day, but things have now cooled off somewhat, raising 15-20 fish per boat. There has been green water to the South, with our boats having to travel over 40 miles to find good blue water and consistent raises, although the numbers have reduced to the high single digits for raises.
The winter almanac is forecasting the coldest winter in North America in a decade – so this is a great year to book in for a fishing trip to the calm waters and sunshine of Guatemala while we still have dates available ! Get our FREE Angling Guide to Guatemala

11 November 2009

Greetings Fisherpeople,

To only refer to this past few days as interesting or enjoyable would be doing a great injustice to some downright hilarious high jinks by my fun loving guests, Jay Roff, Diego Roff, Tod Emerson, Jay Thompson, Don Nachels, and Jarrad Rebich. It is due to the actions of men like these that I can write some extremely interesting fishing reports, and I thank them for all the new stories I now have to tell my clients over cocktails.

Having travelled down from Houston on the overnight red-eye flight, they seemed to be in high spirits upon arrival at the HFC camp that afternoon. Perhaps they were just naturally happy people, or perhaps the eight hours they spent in various airport bars, vans, and boats during their journey brought on the very noticeable glow they projected. As the first night grew late, their glow increased, and someone came up with the absolutely astonishing idea of going gator grabbing. Even more astonishing is the fact I agreed to allow them to do it, and ordered HFC guide, Alejito, to bring his boat around.

Gathering up all the flashlights, spotlights, and cigarette lighters available in the camp, this band of very merry men began their adventure. There was an air of excitement as they slowly eased along the shoreline in search of their prey, which was a species of alligator called a "baba" by the locals. The fine, yet occasionally dangerous, art of gator grabbing started at HFC some fourteen years ago when three seemingly intelligent men got drunk and decided they just had to get themselves a gator, which amazingly they did without losing any body parts of their own. I was optimistic these new gator aficionados would be equally lucky, but I did order my staff to keep the first aid kit handy just in case.

Undoubtedly, one the finest feats of gator grabbing ever witnessed was performed by Don Nachels, who will forever be know to everyone as "Matbaba", which loosely translates to mean gator killer. Well “Matbaba” was perched on the bow of the boat anxiously awaiting his turn at grabbing a gator when suddenly a wide set of red eyes materialized fifteen feet in front of him. As the boat slipped quietly nearer the reptile, he slowly eased himself over the gunnels and into the dark waters. Actually, his boat mates say he basically leaned too far over and fell in, but for this story he eased into the water. It is about here that the stories begin to vary, because “Matbaba” either used stealth honed over years while hunting deer, or he got his feet stuck in the mud. Whichever technique he used, he seemed to slowly begin to lean forward directly for the six foot gator, which thankfully was blinded by the five flashlights shining in his eyes. The absence of fear was astonishing as he extended his arms and opened his hands to grab the gator. "KA-SWOOSH" Water flew in all directions as he and the gator became one. Soon the air was filled with flying mud and water droplets as “Matbaba” sought to get a firm hold on his prey, or at least that is what he says. Other witnesses say they distinctly heard him shout out, "What the hell am I doing in the water!" Followed shortly there after by, "Holy crap! What is this gator doing here?"

This story had a happy ending with “Matbaba” returned safely to the interior of the boat, and the gator swimming off wondering what it was that had fallen on him.

When they weren't trying to become one with our local wildlife, they managed to do battle with some fine peacock bass. Tod Emerson's 14 lb specimen led all anglers, and he also had the big payara of the week with a 15 lb toothy fighter. Most of the local peacock bass had spawned this past full moon, and the males were viciously guarding the young fry from predators and artificial baits thrown there way. Having your Woodchopper tail smacked high in the air was normal. Along with Woodchoppers, 7" Pavon Prop, spinnerbaits, Super Spooks, and Chug Bugs also raised quality fish.

The water level continues to slowly fall, and it is going to continue doing so for the next six months at least. This means many of HFC's most famous fishing holes are going to become active in the coming days, and you won't want to miss the fantastic action for both peacock bass and payara. This extremely low water level is a phenomena that occurs here every 7-8 years, and it is what a fisherman's dreams are made of.

We still have open dates available, but they are filling faster than even I had hoped they would. Get together with your friends or family and set a date for you to come enjoy the finest peacock bass and payara fishing available on Lake Guri. Call Al Schaefer at South Fishing for a trip to remember.

Everyone have a GREAT week!!!

Regards,

When you are thinking of golf destinations, Guatemala may not be the first that comes to mind.
For a population of about 14 million living in a country roughly the size of Tennessee, golf remains largely an elitist sport, but that is starting to change. The country is home to five courses and to date has comfortably accommodated the country’s two thousand or so active players.

The most recent addition to this stable of International courses is La Reunion located just 11 miles outside the old capital and world heritage site of Antigua.

The course is based within the 1380—acres of a former coffee plantation and in the shadows of four towering volcanoes—Agua, Fuego, Acatenango, and Pacaya. It has been appropriately named “Fuego Maya” or Mayan Fire – and was designed by renowned course architect Pete Dye. The course is relatively long, although even an average golfer should be able to complete the round in under 4 hours.

Although lacking the links (excuse pun) to the Royal & Ancient, there are indigenous links to the ancient Mayan calendar, which consists of 20 months of 18 days each. The final 5 days of the lunar calendar are then consumed by “Wayeb” which is held as a sacred time for relaxation and contemplation for the coming journey or the following calendar – much as the golfers’ consider their return to the challenges of the course or their next tee time.

Despite its only now emerging golfing population, Guatemala is starting to display its talents on the International golf scene – the country recently qualifying for the first time ever in an International event with the success of two budding stars Pablo Acuña and Alejandro Villavicencio who will represent the country at the Omega Mission Hills World Cup to be held in China November 27-30 which has a prize of $5.5 million.

If you want to try your hand on this remarkable course perhaps as an “off” day from fishing in Guatemala, The GreatSailfishing Company is pleased to arrange tee times for you – and even has a selection of golf sets for you to choose from (it can be difficult to rent clubs in Guatemala), just ask and we will be happy to accommodate you !

The fishing this past week has ranged from outstanding to tough – as has the weather ! The storm that is now approaching the Gulf Coast has been busy pushing fronts across all of Central America – and Guatemala was quick to catch a cold ! Early in this past week we have been seeing days where 20-30 billfish raised was the norm – but as soon as the front and the weather came in, the seas built and unfortunately the fishing slowed. The Netland group saw decent fishing their first day, with a half dozen sailfish and a good sized Blue Marlin that took over two hours to bring to the boat for release.

Following days however brought ever increasing seas, and most boats stayed closer to shore – either splitting the day with some inshore fishing, or searching for Dorado and sailfish at about 25 miles.

The weather has now passed, and with the calmer seas the bait is now concentration again – so we are hopeful to see consistent fishing more on a par to the early part of last week than the latter days.

The winter almanac is forecasting the coldest winter in North America in a decade – so this is a great year to book in for a fishing trip to the calm waters and sunshine of Guatemala while we still have dates available ! Family , friends and of course fish!

It's such a blessing to have your family and friends visit you here in Panama. My two sons, Bobby and his older Brother John ,"Roon" , plus there buddy, Tyler Nelson are header home to the cold and wet pacific northwest this afternoon. They had visited me earlier in the year in late April fishing for tuna .

They all wanted another shot at the fishing we have here year around so I convinced them that October was not our high season but still lots of fish. They wanted to take advantage of the super cheep air fare being offered by Continental durring the "green season". For just under $400.00 they fley from Seattle round trip! I picked them up in David last week and we drove here to the lodge. All brought their top he line spinning rods and reels from Shimano. Most were loaded with the new braided lines with 200# mono leaders and a lots of Williamson poppers. These guy's are serious fishermen and all they think about is seeing a huge Pargo, Rooster or Tuna blast the surface charging that popper. We were blessed with good weather, flat seas and only an occasional shower. We fished Punta Barica the first few days as it's the "Mecca" for the big Roosters and Pargo. There are a series of big rocks which hold the monsters. Victor one of out full time guides fished the boys for the first two days as I had taken a fall, don't ask how, and broke my tail bone. He produced big fish daily. Roosters over 50#, the biggest Pargo Tyler had ever landed, plus jacks, barracuda and a ton of Dorado. I fished with the boy's for the next few days trolling the thick weed lines off of Ladrones Island, singles, doubles triples and even a quadruple on Dorado.

When we came back to the docks daily, the cleaning of the fish took over an hour! fresh Dorado, with cilantro and lime, Dorado with butter and garlic and fresh cavichi nightly! Columbia, "Margot", Belki and our staff did a fantastic job every night at dinner. "Margot" made her Pargo soup, "IT IS TO DIE FOR" by far the best soup I have ever eaten is the general comment after the meal! Here are a few pictures and hope you all might take a look some day at coming down this time of year.
